PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This appointment is expected to increase the teaching and research efforts and capacity of the School, in terms of Geology and Soil Sciences.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. TEACHING
· Teaching at undergraduate level in Geology and/or Soil Sciences
2. RESEARCH
· Undertake research within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management on issues of Geology
· Provide supervision of post-graduate students.
· Produce research output through international and national accredited articles.
· Fundraising for research
3. ADMINISTRATION
· Administrative tasks including curriculum development
4. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Application of expertise in communities to address local identified issues of Geology
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Excellent communications skills (written and verbal)
· Computer proficiency – MS Office
· Practical geological/palaeontological skills
· Field work experience
· Ability to organise tasks effectively, meet deadlines and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Accuracy and attention to detail to deliver accurate products conforming to applicable quality standards.
· Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Excellent researcher skills
· Project management abilities
· Ability to work efficiently under pressure
Minimum requirements
· Honours degree in Geology
· 1 year teaching experience for undergraduates - desirable
· 1 year tutoring experience for undergraduates - essential
