PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To maintain the Chemistry Laboratories in clean and safe conditions, assist the laboratory technicians in running laboratory duties.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Arrange glassware and small instruments for undergraduate student chemistry experiment.
· Cleaning glasswares, benches and sinks in the chemistry laboratories.
· Assist the laboratory technicians in preparing the required reagents and solutions timeously for conducting undergraduate student chemistry experiments.
· Assist the laboratory technicians in preparation and assembling equipment used in chemistry laboratory.
· Maintain the chemistry laboratory and chemical storeroom in a well ordered and clean state.
· Assist in maintaining an inventory of laboratory chemicals and supplies.
· Photocopying and administration work as messenger.
· Assist in invigilating for students practical and theory tests.
· Perform other duties assigned by the head of department.
Minimum requirements
Qualification
· Matric and a Diploma in Chemistry is essential. BSc degree will be an added advantage.
· Memberships are desirable.
Experience/s
· 3 year’s Laboratory Assistant experience in working in a Chemistry laboratory is essential.
· 3 year’s Laboratory Assistant experience in using of scientific methods for measurement is essential.
· 3 year’s Laboratory Assistant experience in handling glassware and other fragile chemical apparatus is essential.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Basic safety rules in a Chemistry Laboratory.
· Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to a Chemical Lab.
· Scientific procedures and techniques used in a Chemistry Laboratory.
· Good technical skills (operation and maintenance of chemical equipment).
· Computer literacy in Internet, Email & MS Office (Word, Excel, Power point).
· Good report writing skills (reports, inventory, instructions).
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Good communication skills (verbal and written).
· Ability to function as part of the team and also in a multicultural environment.
· Ability to work effectively under pressure.
· Good time management.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
