Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      Laboratory work
·       Washing of glassware.
·       Visit and inspect laboratories frequently to see if any technical support is required.
·       Sorting and pinning of specimen samples collected by ecology and entomology
·       Re-filling drums with ethanol for laboratory use.
2.      Research field assistance
·       Assist in preparation for field work and excursions (packing and loading of field equipment and stock). Assistance with school/other groups that visit Zoology museum
·       Responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and stock taking of stock during long research trips.
·       Cleaning of equipment on return from field work.
·       Assistance with insect, ticks, and small mammal trapping
·       Maintenance of undergraduate microscopes.
3.      Taking care or laboratory animals
·       Responsible for the feeding and wellbeing of laboratory animals in the Zoology department.
·       Cleaning of cages /tanks on a weekly basis.
4.      Transport work
·       Collection of animals at the animal research centre.
·       Collection of stationaries at the different collection points.
·       Responsible for the removal of waste glass from the labs tot the recycling skip.
5.      OHS
·       Take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by the former’s actions or omissions at work.
6.      Ad hoc
·       Ad hoc tasks as required.

Minimum requirements

·       Grade 12 is essential with Biology/Life Sciences as a subject.
·       2 years independent driving experience with valid driver’s license.
·       1 year experience in a laboratory environment.
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, email, internet) with accurate typing skills.
·       Excellent reading and writing skills in English and Afrikaans.
·       Time management.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Excellent communication skills, including providing regular feedback about given tasks via at least e-mail
·       Bilingual (English / Afrikaans)
·       Punctual, on time completion of set tasks imperative.
·       Physical agility – physically fit and able to perform required physical tasks.
·       Able to work in a team.
