Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The MUST Deep Learning research group (https://engineering.nwu.ac.za/must) performs basic and applied research in machine learning, with an emphasis on the theory and application of deep learning. MUST is a member of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR), and the coordinator of the ‘Machine learning in support of theoretical and computational science’ research programme of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS). As such, the group develops and applies specialised machine learning (ML) techniques with a network of collaborating researchers.
The purpose of this position is to participate in selected research and development (R&D) projects in MUST, contributing to the software development of predefined deliverables. The incumbent will work in a team, under the supervision of a senior researcher. The successful candidate will have practical experience with the full software lifecycle (specification, design, implementation, testing, documentation, reiteration, deployment) and be able to assume the role quickly and efficiently. The position has considerable scope for growth and gaining experience in the software development process, as well as in the application of machine learning tools. It also provides exposure to an environment that conducts machine learning research of international standing.

Development:
- Design and development of software.
Client Liaison:
- Liaise with external clients and collaborators on related projects.
Administration:
- Participate in MUST support activities, such as administration and documentation, as required.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A four year degree or honours degree in Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field.
- A Master’s degree (or enrolled) is an advantage.
- Two years’ practical experience in the full software development lifecycle.
- Two years' practical experience in programming using Python.
- Experience in developing machine learning models is an advantage.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Advanced software development skills, including the design, implementation and testing of software systems.
- Strong programming and/or scripting skills, especially using Python.
- Ability to use software productivity tools (IDEs, distributed version control, debuggers, profilers, etc.).
- Proficient in the use of Linux operating systems (command line, virtual environments, etc.).
- Good technical writing and communication skills.
- Experience using machine learning related toolkits is a specific advantage (numpy, pandas, PyTorch, matplotlib, Tensorflow, Keras etc.).
- Intermediate to advanced data science experience is an advantage (data gathering, visualising, cleaning, filtering, exploring etc.).
