PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Afrikaans linguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It is important that the candidate has a research mindset and can be involved in the research that is done in the linguistics sub-program(s) of the research focus area Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings (UPSET).
Job description
1. Teaching and Learning and Higher Degree supervision
· Undergraduate teaching and learning and postgraduate supervision in Afrikaans applied and descriptive linguistics.
2. Personal research and Innovation and/or Creative Outputs
· Individual research that engage with and contribute research outputs to the research that is being done in the linguistics sub-program(s) of UPSET.
3. Academic Leadership and Administration
· Fulfilling administrative and organisational tasks and duties in the service of Subject Group Afrikaans and Dutch, the School of Language and the NWU, as the arise.
4. Social responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement)
· Participating in relevant community engagement projects.
Minimum requirements
· An Honours Degree in Afrikaans and Dutch/ Applied/General Linguistic specialising in at least one Afrikaans/Dutch linguistic module.
ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:
· Relevant subject specific societies and organisations.
· 1 year experience in teaching or tutoring Afrikaans linguistics, general/applied linguistics.
· 1 year experience as research or teaching assistant.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Knowledge of theoretical and methodological frameworks for Afrikaans descriptive linguistic and/or applied linguistics.
· Above average computer skills, including MS Office, browser-based applications (like search engines), email application, video-conferencing software, and social media platforms.
· Knowledge of new and innovative teaching methods regarding e-learning, multimedia, and classroom practice will serve as a strong recommendation.
· Research experience in Afrikaans linguistics (in the form of accredited research outputs) will serve as a strong recommendation.
· Experience regarding the curriculum and teaching of Afrikaans language acquisition modules will serve as a strong recommendation.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
