PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Duties of the successful incumbent shall mainly include (but not be limited to) direct, on-site supervision of contractors as they set up site, execute and close out work as set out in the relevant tender documents.
The aim shall be to ensure fully functional installations of uniform and undisputed quality, materials, and workmanship across the sites of delivery of the NWU.
The successful incumbent shall use his/her own knowledge and experience of electronic systems to
• identify technical deficiencies and assist the NWU and its contractors in finding solutions and/or
• integrate newly installed systems into the NWU back-office- and network environments and/or
• attending and/or actively leading and/or chairing technical or project feedback meetings and/or
• regularly reporting in writing (or verbally on request) on all these matters and/or
• liaise with all stakeholders towards successful completion of projects.
Although this is not a project-management position, duties include executing own tasks towards projects and regularly reporting on project-related matters such as
• project progress (measured against the set work- and budget timelines),
• inferior or unsatisfactory quality of materials or workmanship (measured against IT standards),
• functional deficiencies or scope creep (measured against the set functional requirements & scope),
• breach of contract (measured against the contractual documents),
• re-measurement of quantities (in comparison with the original Bill of Materials),
• stakeholder engagement (measured against the original communications plan),
• possibilities and innovations to
o lower cost of ownership whilst maintaining set standards
o improve project throughput.
Job description
· Project Supervision
Supervision across entire scope of project to ensure quality-, time and budget constraints are met. Strict adherence to timelines is essential.
· Continuous Quality Assurance
Continuous quality inspection, -control and feedback during project life cycle is essential to ensure a durable product of high quality, aligned to the set specifications and standards
· Communications
Draw up and make use of generic communication plans for similar types of projects. Identify stakeholders per project and action generic communications plan. Continuous feedback and communication during projects are essential
· Ensure Resource Efficiency
Allocate, use and supervise available resources to ensure project success. Resources include, but is not limited to people, documentation, communication, materials, systems, contracts, contractors
· Provide Specialist Support
Specialist support iro electronic and/or IT problem solving / support within own team, between stakeholders within projects and on site
· Ad-hoc Services
Support the Project Management function and other official or supporting activities required within the NWU and ITES department
· Occupational Health & Safety
Supervise and assist iro occupational OHS issues on site. Ensure approval of contractors’ safety files before start of projects
Minimum requirements

Qualifications/ Job requirements
· Completed Diploma or Baccalaureus degree in Electronics (Not Electrical/Heavy current or pure IT).
· Valid Driver’s Licence, code EB(B), able to drive to sites alone
· Own smart cell phone capable of handling applications in use by the NWU (not sponsored)
Essential experience (to be listed in CV and proved upon request)
At least 3 years’ solid experience in:
· All facets of supervising contractors on-site during executing of works
· Project scope-, budget- and execution supervision
· Interpretation of technical and building drawings and updating as-built drawings
· Planning of workflow, optimal resource allocation and -application
· Application of OHS principles on the work site
· Technical knowledge, installation and fault finding in at least two of the below systems in an IT environment
o Access control, CCTV, alarms and other electronic security systems
o Teaching and Learning systems including Audio-Visual systems
o e-conference systems and -software
o Fire alarm systems (SANS 10139)
o Monitoring systems (SCADA / PLC experience)
ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES
· In-depth knowledge of TCP-IP and related protocols & technologies
· Network architecture
· Accreditations that may be advantageous to a candidate, include
o Fire alarms (SANS 10139)
o Audio Visual (SACIA or other)
o Electrical (Red seal)
o PMBOK (or similar)
KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Portfolio of evidence may be requested):
· Project and Construction Safety files and approval processes of such files
· Involvement and successful supervision of
o Multiple simultaneous projects
o Multi-million Rand electronic projects
· In-depth knowledge of
o Project management
o Supervision principles
o Fire detection systems
· Documentation skills
o Accurately reporting on projects
o Documentation of standards
· Ability to do knowledge transfer and ensure knowledge retention between peers and team
· Basic financial knowledge
o Interpret quotations and tenders
o Evaluate contractor invoices (validate against project progress and re-measured BOQ)
