Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
1.      RESEARCH & INNOVATION
·       Conduct and supervise research projects as required
·       Quality assurance and management of research outputs
·       Drive and grow international collaboration.
·       Conduct own research and publication and maintain academic scholarship.
·       Support engaged research within the Subject Group, School and Faculty
 
2.      TEACHING & LEARNING
·       Teach modules as required
·       Quality assurance and management of teaching outputs.
·       Employ new technological developments to enhance the offering of modules/courses
·       Manage and partake in student communication and support activities. Ensure the adequate provision thereof given BEE and transformation requirements.
 
3.      COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
·         Participate in community engagement activities
 
4.      MANAGEMENT
·         Develop, initiate and drive research proposals for external funding.
·         Embark on innovative independent initiatives to obtain funding, facilities and/or equipment to enable research output.
·         Collaborate and build effective relationships for success model delivery


KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Proven track record of postgraduate student supervison
·       Proven track record of successfully applying for research funding
·       Leadership and outreach (Community engagement) expertise
·       Demonstrable theoretical/modelling/experimental Physics expertise
·       Excellent problem-solving skills
·       Excellent computer skills
·       Knowledge of the higher education system
·       Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Sound interpersonal relationship skills
·       Excellent communication skills
·       Team-oriented and reliable
·       Willing to take on administrative and leadership duties

Minimum requirements

·       PhD in Astrophysics/Astronomy/Material Physics/Space Physics
·       5 years’ teaching and learning experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level
·       5 years’ post-graduate supervision and training experience
·       5 years’ experience as an active researcher
