NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (VANDERBIJLPARK CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: V000209 VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7/A8 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT / FIXED TERM CONTRACT WITH BENEFITS PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The candidate will be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules, and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of postgraduate or honours students.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and learning.
  • Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statics modules.
  • Development of new modules.

Research and innovation.
  • Supervision of postgraduate/honours student and studying towards a PhD degree/supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Participate in other money stream 3 endeavours.
  • Participate in other money stream 3 endeavours, such as the presentation of short courses.

Administrative/management.
  • Help with administrative and management tasks within the subject group.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • PhD in Mathematical statistics or closely related field is essential for Senior lecturer position.
  • Masters in Mathematical statistics or closely related field is essential for Lecturer position.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses (Senior Lecturer).
  • Two (2) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and honours courses (Lecturer).
  • Proven publication track record for Senior lecturer position
  • Registration for a PhD is essential for the Lecturer position.
  • Membership of South African Statistical Association or other Statistics bodies is desirable.
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA).
  • Provide guidance with regards to data collection.
  • Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
  • Handle large undergraduate classes.
  • Supervision of honours students.
  • Communicate well in English (verbally and in written).
  • Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Work independently, but also as a team.
  • Have a good people skills.
  • Professional and ethical behaviour.
  • Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
 
       
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
