Job description
- Legal Services- Ensure legal services offered by the Law Clinic staff are done on a day to day basis and in a professional, speedy and effective manner. Monitor, review and assist staff with drafting of letters, documents and pleadings. Mentor and supervise project coordinators (supervising legal practitioners), candidate legal practitioners, paralegals, students and administrative staff. Appear in court in complex matters and mediate disputes. Receive and attend to client files by checking letters, pleadings and progress on files. Furnish legal advice and opinions to clients and staff. Research the law and stay abreast of recent case law affecting legal services. Ensure that matters did not prescribe and that we adhere to the time limits as set out in the regulations. File administration • Regular report on activities.
- Increase the amount of community outreach activities and access to NWU expertise, by inter alia-Coordinating compulsory community service conducted by students as part of the requirements to obtain submission to write examination (IURI 472). Coordinating teaching and learning activities for students working at the MC Law Clinic (IURE 416/426). Coordinating outreach workshops (community and school workshops). Coordinating training to the community on law related topics
- Planning and coordination of IURI 472 and IURE 416/472 timetable, practical classes and assessments •.Present IURI 472 practical classes Assessment of IURI 472 students • Strategical planning to ensure alignment of modules across campuses • Mentor and supervise project coordinators (supervising legal practitioners) involved in teaching and learning • Planning and coordination of IURE 416 timetable, practical classes and assessments • Present IURE 416 seminars, round table discussions and other practical classes • Assessment of IURE 416 students • Mentor and supervise students working in the MC Law Clinic (IURI 472 and IURE 416) • Update and maintain study guides and module outcome documents • Drafting case studies and assignments • Assist with marketing and administration of short courses and short learning programmes offered by the PC Law Clinic • Increase the amount of student participation in the activities of the MC Law Clinic
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor of Laws (LL B) is essential.
- LLM is desirable.
- Accreditation with Legal Practice Council is essential
EXPERIENCE
- 2 years’ admission as legal practitioner is essential
- 1 years’ experience in teaching and learning is desirable.
- 1 years’ experience in mediation is desirable
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
· Legal language skills
· Computer literacy in MS Word and Office, as well as the use of email and internet
· Good communication skills (verbal and written)
· Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
· Sound knowledge of clinical legal education, criminal and civil law
· Ability to supervise and mentor candidate legal practitioners, paralegals, admin staff and students

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
