PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position is to provide specialist academic and support service, design, manufacture and repair scientific and educational instruments and apparatus of the University
Job description
· Responsible for the manufacturing and repairing of equipment that is needed by personnel and research entities/department
· Redesign and manufacturing to update and adapt equipment to better suit changing requirements of researchers and educators
· NWU Neutron Monitor station maintenance and data capturing
· Responsible for, through consultation, designing and drawing of equipment to enable the accurate and repetitive manufacture of equipment.
· Design new version of Neutron Monitor.
· Development of new experimental projects within the CSR (Centre for Space Research)
· Responsible for proper use and care of machines, materials and equipment in the workshop.
· Responsible for keeping accurate time sheets and job cards to enable management to keep track of all costs and time spend on each project
· Responsible for the adherence of Occupational Health and Safety requirements
· Provide practical assistance to the lecturer during Physics students practical sessions
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

· Ability to design and manufacture advanced electronic systems
· Advanced soldering techniques.
· CAD experience, specifically PC board design.
· Advanced hand skills

Minimum requirements
· National Diploma or N6 in Electronic and Mechanical Engineering
· 5 years’ experience in designing and manufacturing electronic equipment for research
