PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the role is to contribute to the advancement of teaching, research and postgraduate supervision in the field of Mathematical Statistics or a closely related discipline. The incumbent will be expected to conduct and successfully complete high-quality research, disseminate research findings through scholarly publications, and contribute to the development of the discipline. The role further entails providing mentorship to junior researchers, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules, contributing to curriculum and module development, and supervising Master’s and PhD research projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning
- Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules. Development of new modules and programmes.
Research
- Conducting academic research (publishing of research papers, etc.) and supervision of postgraduate (PhD and Master’s) students.
Administration/Management
- Help with administrative, organisational and management tasks within the subject group.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD in Mathematical Statistics (NQF level 10).
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience with a proven publication track record, including a solid record of academic publications in accredited journals.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including lecturing modules for which the candidate has sole responsibility.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the administration of large class groups, including taking a leading role in coordinating and managing the administrative duties associated with large class groups.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in supervising students at PhD and Master’s level, with a proven track record of successfully supervising such students to completion.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Membership of the South African Statistical Association (SASA).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
The candidate must be able to:
- Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSSSPSS, and STATISTICA).
- Provide guidance with regards to data collection.
- Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
- Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
- Handle large undergraduate classes.
- Supervise honours students.
- Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing).
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
- Work independently, but also as a team.
- Have very good people skills.
- Professional and ethical behaviour.
- Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
