NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (VANDERBIJLPARK CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: HUMANITIES POSITION NUMBER: V000133 VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER: ENGLISH PEROMNES GRADE: A7 Purpose of the position: An appointment of a Senior Lecturer to teach BA English modules on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, North-West University. The applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses and supervise postgraduate students.
Job description

Teaching and Learning

·       Take responsibility for a full lecturing load as regards the ENLL and/or ENLS modules, including

preparing for classes and guided development of learning materials.

·       Related administrative tasks, such as submitting marks and monitoring student progress.

·       Setting of tests and examinations, as well as marking assessments.

·       Hold office hours for consultations with students.

·       Attend meetings (with subject group, teaching team, and/or module tutors).

·       Act as module co-ordinator across the three NWU sites.

·       Supervision of postgraduate students.

·       Internal moderation of assessments.

·       Records management; maintaining module files for Internal and/or External Programme Evaluation.

 

 

2.     Research and innovation and/or Creative Outputs

·       Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.

·       Present at national and international conferences.

 

3.     Academic Leadership and Administration

·       Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise (for example, serving

on a Faculty Board or committee).

·       Good organisational and administrative skills.

 

4.     Social Responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement)

·       Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.      

 

5.     Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

·       Cooperate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet the legal

requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and

practices.

Minimum requirements

 

 ·       Applicable PhD in English literature or applicable possible.

·       Minimum 3 years of lecturing experience at a tertiary institution.

·       Active involvement in research, as evidenced by a minimum of 2 publications in accredited journals.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:

-         Experience with postgraduate supervision.

·       Membership of relevant subject-specific societies and organisations.

·       Experience in teaching  literature modules; ranging from 17th to 21st century English poetry, drama and fiction, South African literature, and/or literary theory.

·       Experience with curriculum design, and/or module design.

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·       Excellent English language & communication skills

·       Knowledge of the mechanics of literary text types

·       Good understanding of grammatical analysis and linguistics

·       Online and in-person facilitation of teaching-learning

·       Excellent level of computer literacy and experience with LMS systems, MS Teams, Outlook, MS Office

and the internet.

  The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised

and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
