NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY MAHIKENG FACULTY/ DIVISION: NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES SCHOOL: AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES POSITION NAME: TECHNICIAN-TECHNICAL SUPERVISOR POSITION NUMBER: M001079 VACANCY: 1 PEROMNES GRADE: P11 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Successful candidate will have the primary responsibility of assisting the Farm Manger with managing the operations on the University Farm Section: Animals Production (Dairy Unit, Small stock & Beef cattle Unit, Pigs Unit and Poultry Unit). This is the UMC mandate
Job description

1.    Ability to assist with Farm Administration, personnel, biosecurity and the day to day running of an effective and efficient farming enterprise
 
2.    Ability to assist with Financial management and planning, that include: budgeting, financial management and control, cash flow management, farm sector financial viability evaluations
 
3.    Ability to do/supervise maintenance of farm - infrastructure, machinery, equipment, implements, fences, etc.
 
 
4.    Management and production of livestock and aquaculture within acceptable norms, standards and legislative frameworks (Animal Protection Act, etc.)
 
5.    Management and production of pastures within acceptable norms and standards
 
6.    Ensure conducive conditions to enable smooth running of research projects and teaching/learning (WIL – Work integrated learning)
 
7.    Management of on-farm sales of farm produce within Marketing of Agricultural Products Act 47 , 1996, Meat Safety Act 40, 2000, Animal Health Act 7, 2002, etc. and obsolete assets while adhering to all NWU policies in that regard
 
8.    Perform responsibilities as assigned by the Farm Manager and Director for School of Agricultural Sciences
 

Minimum requirements

·         B Qualification in Agriculture (Preferably Diploma/Btech) specializing in Animal science/production is essential
·         Registration with the SACNSP is desirable
·         Being a member of the SASAS is desirable
 
EXPERIENCE:
 
·          5 years experience in livestock Production, particularly Management of, livestock, pastures is essential
·          2 years experience in livestock facilities management is desirable
 
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS):
 
·         In-depth subject knowledge/expertise in Livestock production and management
·         Human resource (HR) management of support staff
·         Knowledge of farm planning, financial management, budgeting and evaluation
·         Understanding of the Basic Conditions of Employment
·         Understanding the management and production practices of the enterprises to be undertaken
·         Knowledge of agricultural maintenance of farm, farm infrastructure, equipment and machinery
·         Ability to supervise Unit Supervisors, Tractor Drivers and Farm General Workers and manage them as a team to facilitate optimal production within the teaching (WIL) and research environment
·         Ability to work with Academics and Researchers
·         Ability to know the weather occurrences of your farming area, and interpret it for optimal production   
·         Ability to operate farm machinery and perform basic mechanics repairs and maintenance

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
