NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY MAHIKENG FACULTY/ DIVISION: NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES (FNAS) POSITION NAME: SENIOR LECTURER (SL) / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (AP) / PROFESSOR (P) POSITION NUMBER: M000420 VACANCY: 1 PEROMNES GRADE: A7/A6/A5 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Teaching and research in any nuclear science field for example: Nuclear Science, Radiation Protection, Applications of Radiation in Industry, Radio analytical chemistry, Nuclear Waste minimization or Radio-pharmacy, Medical Physics (e.g. radiography, radiotherapy, SPECT, PET, CT-SCAN NMRI), Honours to MSc level. Ability to conduct research, publish and supervise postgraduates students in his/her field of specialization. Ensuring the development of methodologies for Radiation sample analysis in his/her Applied Nuclear Radiation Science field of specialization. Training of staff postgraduate and undergraduate students in laboratory techniques and analysis in his/her specialisation. Ensuring chain of custody for all radioactive materials at CARST, quality analysis and control of results from samples submitted for analysis. Implementation of laboratory Radiation Protection and Safety Program and quality-control system. He/she should be able to source for Third stream income Projects
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
1.    Teaching:
 
  • Teaching and examining in any nuclear science field for example; Nuclear Science, Radiation protection, Applications of Radiation in Industry, Radio analytical chemistry, Nuclear Waste minimization or Radio-pharmacy, Medical Physics (e.g. radiography, radiotherapy, SPECT, PET, CT-SCAN NMRI), at Honours to MSc level.
 
2.    Research:
 
  • Conduct research and publish.
  •  Engage in third stream income generating projects for CARST.
  • Initiate research projects and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Attract research funding.
 
3.    Community Engagement:
 
  • Participate, initiate and contribute to societal and community engagement projects.
 
4.    Health and Safety:

  • Ensure quality control of all sample analysis and Implement Radiation
  • Protection procedures.

Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • PhD in Nuclear Science, Nuclear Physics, Physics, Medical Physics, or equivalent specialising in any of Radio-Analytical Chemistry; Nuclear Science; Nuclear Physics; Alpha-Beta-Gamma Spectrometry; Radio-Pharmacy; Medical Physics; Nuclear Radioactive Waste is essential
  • MSc in Nuclear Science, Nuclear Physics, Physics, Medical Physics, or equivalent specialising in any of Radio-Analytical Chemistry; Nuclear Science; Nuclear Physics; Alpha-Beta-Gamma Spectrometry; Radio-Pharmacy; Medical Physics; Nuclear Radioactive Waste is essential
  • SACNASP accreditation is desirable
  •  Membership of SACNASP / SAIP/ NIASA Or Any Equivalent is desirable

EXPERIENCE:

  • 2-5 years’ Experience in teaching related to nuclear science, PhD & MSc Modules in Nuclear Science is essential
  • 2-5 year’s Proven Scientific Track Record of Postgraduate PhD & MSc supervision and at least 10 publications in peer reviewed journals is essential for AP/P
  • 2-5 year’s Industry experience in nuclear science is desirable


 FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS):

  • Ability to source for Projects funding to support student research
  • Proven ability to supervise PhD and MSc postgraduates for AP and P
  • Good practical knowledge of analytical techniques in his/her field of specialization.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
 
  • Ability to work with individuals and varying personalities to achieve set goals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Time management
  • Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills


The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
