NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY MAFIKENG FACULTY/ DIVISION: HUMANITIES SCHOOL: LANGUAGES 8247 POSITION NAME: LEXICOGRAPHER M000220 VACANCY: 1 PEROMNES GRADE: P12 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: This is a Setswana National Lexicography Unit (SEFALA) Board of Directors in collaboration with North West University. The successful candidate will be responsible for compiling and editing dictionaries for both print and online publication. They will be working on the Setswana monolingual Dictionaries, Setswana Bilingual Dictionaries, Setswana Specialised Monolingual and Bilingual Dictionaries, Multilingual Dictionaries and Lexicographic materials.
Job description

Key Resposnibilities:
  • Monitors and record uses of language and use databases to interrogate a wide range of evidence.
  • Considers both the meaning and usages of words and compile definitions in a structured manner.
  • Edits, proofread and check the accuracy of their own and others' text, and perform editorial tasks.
  • identifying new words that are in common usage for inclusion in the dictionary.
  • compiling new and reviewing existing definitions in strict accordance with previously agreed protocols.
Dictionary Development:
  • Development of Setswana dictionaries and Lemmatization.

Editorial Work:
  • Review existing definitions in strict accordance with previously agreed protocols and editing of dictionary work, lexicography and terminology development

Marketing:
  • Implement the marketing policy and strategy


Research:
  • Identify new words that are in common usage for inclusion in the dictionary


Recording and keeping database of lemmas:
  • Monitors and record uses of language and use databases to interrogate a wide range of evidence

Additional Daily Activities:
  • Any other job given by the senior personnel or the Editor-in-Chief.
  • using specialist databases comprising thousands of pieces of language from a wide range of sources (including literature, newspapers and transcripts of television and radio - this body of language is known as the 'corpus').
  • checking the corpus for evidence of meanings and usages of a word or phrase;
  • using judgment to assess which meaning of a word is the primary (most used) meaning, which meanings are secondary or less commonly used, and in which order the meanings should be ranked;
  • monitoring and recording changes in the use of words and phrases that have been noticed in the course of day-to-day life.

Minimum requirements

BA Degree in African Languages/Language Practice/ Linguistics or Communications, Specializing with Lexicography and/ or Terminology Development is essential.
BA Honours degree in African Languages, linguistics or Applied Language Studies with focus on Setswana would serve as an added advantage.
1-2 years in the ability to develop and coin terms. define lemmas in the area of Setswana and English directly and independently is Desirable.
1 year working in African Languages or Linguistics environment or institution in Setswana
Relevant South African languages Legislations.

Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills):
  • Familiarity with compilation and editing of dictionary work, lexicography and terminology development
  • Sound understanding of lexicography, translation and editing
  • Experience in editing Setswana works and relevant computer skills
  • Communication skills are essential

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
