Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of this position is for the Graphic Designer to utilise expertise to deliver and encourage cutting edge digital and graphical concepts to meet internal clients’ briefs and expectations, in collaboration with Manager and Senior Manager and in line with the NWU brand attributes. The incumbent works in conjunction with the other sub sections of the department and graphic designers on all design solutions, including, digital, web, interactive, social, tablet and mobile screens and print. The Graphic Designer must be knowledgeable of the CID and give sound advice. The fullest understanding of graphic design, typography and digital standards is essential to execute projects of all sizes and complete them with resourcefulness and dedication.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Graphic Design and conceptualising for diverse platforms                        
  • Concept development for both graphic and digital design
  • Ensure files are print ready or web friendly
  • Illustrations and photo editing
  • Sound knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software and web and digital development
  • Keeping abreast of best practises in marketing, corporate design, drawing on other fields like instructional design
  • Design, layout and production of publication material, marketing material and publications (print and digital).
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends and layouts on different media.
2. Brand
  • Oversees quality of designs and correct use of NWU CID
  • Liaise with brand specialist on CID application
  • Take and edit visual imagery for the digital brand store.
  • Maintenance and updating of digital brand store in terms of photos and templates
3. Ad Hoc           
  • Perform ad hoc tasks as assigned by supervisor

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 (essential)
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification(s) (NQF 7) in Digital Graphic Design (Essential).

FUNCTIONAL EXPERIENCE
  • Approximately 2-3 years’ experience in a graphic studio which includes web design, animation, page layout and manipulating of visual material as well as proven knowledge of the printing setup and sub-editing of projects. A further requirement is the ability to migrate design work from a primarily print-based environment to the web for electronic, digital, multimedia, mobile and online publishing (essential)
  • 2-3 years Proven knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (all graphic design applications), MS Office as well as a thorough knowledge of trends in digital publishing and web development(Essential).
  • Knowledge Photography(Desirable)
  • 2-3 years Advance Knowledge: Confident and efficient in using a range of software packages, including Adobe CC (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse, Edge Animate), as well as email and internet(Essential).

  • Advanced: Knowledge and thirst to investigate, innovate, and develop trends and creativity with an emphasis on website, social, and mobile application
  • Proficient: Knowledge of principles for providing customer and personal services.

  • Language Ability

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
