AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY AWAITS AT THE NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) WITHIN THE FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES AT THE CENTRE FOR SPACE RESEARCH FOR A SENIOR SUBJECT SPECIALIST VACANCY (POSITION NUMBER: P001127 GRADED AT PEROMNES P7). THE PURPOSE OF THE POSITION IS TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL RESEARCH SUPPORT IN THE CENTRE FOR SPACE RESEARCH (CSR).
Job description

RESEARCH & INNOVATION:

·         Maintenance of current scientific experiments including optical and radio telescopes and particle detectors

·         Assist with data quality control of existing experiments

·         Liaise with and provide support to national and international research partners

·         Assist with the conceptualizing of new research experiments and provide technical support

·         Deploy and commission new scientific experiments

·         Design, manufacture, and test electronics components for research and commercialization purposes

·         Support engaged research in the faculty

 

TEACHING & LEARNING:

·         Assist with undergraduate practical work

·         Assist with post-graduate research activities

·         Manage and partake in student communication and support activities

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

·         Participate in community engagement activities

 

MANAGEMENT:

·         Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful delivery

·         Participate in appropriate management committees of the CSR

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

·         A N6 National Certificate in Engineering Studies or equivalent qualification

·         A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of electronics.

·         A minimum of 5 years’ experience with conceptualizing, deploying, and commissioning of scientific equipment.

·         A minimum of 5 years’ experience in providing research support, preferably in a higher education setting.

 

 ADDED ADVANTAGES:

·         A relevant degree or diploma.

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·         Excellent problem-solving skills.

·         Adequate computer skills.

·         Knowledge of the higher education system.

·         Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU.

·         Experience with undergraduate and postgraduate student projects would be ideal.
