Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Academic Position at Lecturer Level in the Department of Literature in the School of Languages. The incumbent will be expected to be involved in Undergraduate Teaching and Learning modules, participate in Research activities as well as community engagement activities within the Faculty of Humanities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and learning:

  • Team teaching, student evaluations, assignments, tests and examinations, supervision of postgraduates, be able to teach different genres of literature (poetry, drama, fiction and film) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Have a record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, have experience teaching and willing to teach a variety of literatures from early modern to contemporary.
  • Have a good knowledge of African, world and contemporary literatures of the Global South.

Research and innovation outputs:

  • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.
  • It is mandatory to register for a PhD programme within the first year of employment.

Social responsiveness:

  • Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.
  • Involvement in research entity activities.

Occupational health and safety (OHS):

  • Co-operate with management, OHS officials, and colleagues to help everyone meet their legal requirements, while upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

Management and university service:

  • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in English Literature.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience and proven track record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ research experience.
  • Applicant should be willing to reregister for doctoral studies, conduct research and publish in Literature or related fields.
  • Applicant should be active in research outputs and be involved in community engagement projects.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ teaching experience in the different genres of Literature (Poetry, Drama, Fiction and Film), willing to teach a variety of literatures from early modern to contemporary, and have a good knowledge of African, world and contemporary literatures of the Global South.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Applicant should work effectively as part of a team and relate well with colleagues and peers.
  • Applicant should be knowledgeable in the use of technology.
  • Teaching: Facilitation of blended teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; Team teaching; student evaluations.
  • Develop courses / modules; Assessment (Formative and summative): Assignments, tests and examinations.
  • Deal with administrative tasks when required; Attend workshops, seminars and conferences.
  • Handle large undergraduate classes and provide postgraduate supervision.
  • Computer literacy - Knowledge of Microsoft package.
