Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The UCDG-funded staff member will be appointed in the Postgraduate Support Centre/Research Support Department to actively contribute to the establishment of an enabling environment for supporting master's and doctoral students and their supervisors.

 

The appointee will have the responsibility of assisting the Higher Degrees Academic Support and Higher Degrees Student Development Programmes in implementing the UCDG project and research development activities within the Postgraduate Support Centre/Research Support Department.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Project Coordination:

  • Developing, documenting, and maintaining postgraduate student support management structure, frameworks and tools to support postgraduates and other researchers to use these consistently and effectively.
  • Contributing to the development of project documentation, plans and reports.
  • Development and maintenance of resourced postgraduate student support project/activity plans, including allocation of duties where appropriate.
  • Provide support to referrals from faculties working closely with supervisors.
  • Liaise with faculties on support for postgraduate students in faculties on a campus-based approached especially pipeline students.

2.     Project Administration:

  • Work with the Project Leader and teams of the Postgraduate Student Support Project in the UCDG to plan workshops and writing camps for supporting master’s and doctoral students in the write-up stages of their thesis and dissertations and boosting publication of emergent researchers in their research study journey.
  • Engage with coordinators as needed on the support planning and strategies for interventions on matters that relate only to postgraduate students' development and success.
  • Attend scheduled meetings as per RSD internal operational planning.
  • Write monthly, quarterly, mid-year and annual reports to the Director RS..

3.     Relationship Management, Planning and Training:

  • Manage professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing training and support to postgraduate students across the institution to develop research capabilities.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate systems to enable effective planning and scheduling of project activities.

4.     Ad hoc tasks:

  • Perform ad hoc administrative tasks as assigned by the superior for the general functioning of the organisation unit.

Minimum requirements

·          An honour’s degree (NQF level 8) in any field of study.

·          Membership with the Southern African Research & Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).

·          A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the higher education sector.

·          Experience in developing online resources.

RECOMMENDATION:

·          Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in any field of study.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
