Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Multimedia specialists encompass specialist knowledge and skills in graphic design, animation, video, photography, and multimedia development. These specialists work in close collaboration with the Subject Matter Expert (SME), Instructional Designers and other Multimedia Designers to identify specific training needs, and then conceptualize, design, and develop multimedia study material to address specific teaching and learning needs.

 

Multimedia specialists create content using video, photography, graphics, illustrations, animations, and sound. They design, develop, and deliver aesthetically pleasing and engaging study material and other educational artefacts, for a variety of audiences, platforms, and learning outcomes.

 

These specialists apply visual design best practice principles to the design and development of static and interactive elements (graphics, videos, animations, interactive simulations, etc.), while preserving graphics standards and educational principles from conception to final delivery.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Multimedia Design and Development:

  • Apply key concepts and principles related to media design (multimedia, graphic and video).
  • Provide initial conception (storyboarding, etc.) and time estimates for media development.
  • Populate content and integrate various multimedia components into graphical user interfaces to develop learning material (printed or digital).
  • Assist the senior multimedia designers in production processes.
  • Ensure graphic and video solutions are optimised for integration, performance, usability, and sustainability.
  • Populate content and build multimedia objects according to provided guidelines and storyboards.
  • Produce instructional materials for a variety of delivery formats and platforms.
  • Build basic interactions, animations and navigational structures according to provided guidelines and storyboards.
  • Ensure files are print ready and/or web friendly.
  • Collaborate with senior multimedia designers and instructional designers.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Work closely with the stakeholders to ensure continuation of a stable production environment.

2.     Implementation and Evaluation:

  • Perform usability testing and quality assurance of media elements used across platforms. Ensure media is accessible for all users, including those with disabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external, on all aspects of projects, including planning, content, production level and platforms, turnaround time, corrections, approvals and project estimates.
  • Maintain project management records.
  • Adhere to regulatory guidelines and organizational policies.

3.     Ad Hoc Tasks and Personal Development:

  • Work in cross functional teams.
  • Complete ad hoc tasks as handed down by line manager.
  • Keep up to date regarding new software, new design techniques and theory.

Minimum requirements

·          A Diploma in (NQF level 5) Multimedia Design, Graphic Design or Video production.

·          A minimum of 3 years’ experience in multimedia development.

RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

·          A bachelor degree (NQF level 7) in Multimedia Design, Graphic Design or Video production.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Knowledge of and experience in graphic design, animation, video, photography, and multimedia development.

·          Knowledge of and experience in video and graphic editing software packages such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, Dreamweaver and Animate CC, Apple Final Cut Pro X and Articulate Studio 360.

·          Knowledge and experience with graphic design packages and eLearning Software (Adobe Captivate, Articulate Studio and Articulate Storyline).

·          Very good knowledge and proficient in all the Microsoft Office Programmes.

·          Must be familiar with current digital best practices and be able to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies.

·          Experienced in multimedia development and basic programming skills (JavaScript, CSS and HTML5).

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·          The ability to work in a team, to receive various sources of feedback and the improvement of Multimedia products.

·          Creative in the approach to Multimedia design and development.

·          Effectively and proactively communicate and collaborate with colleagues, manages and other stakeholders.

·          Independent functioning under management guiding, also good organisational and time management skills, taking own initiative and to function well under pressure.

·          Manage multiple, simultaneous projects to reach targets, staying on schedule.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
