Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To provide the necessary supervision and education in water safety among students utilizing the campus pool. To create a teaching environment for beginners and non-swimmers. To administer Winter sporting codes and maintain the facility during the off-season.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lifesaving and Water Safety Education:

  • Enforce discipline and pool rules and procedures.
  • Accept responsibility for all lifesaving procedures when required.
  • Ensure that all required lifesaving equipment is available and that the pool fulfils all safety regulations.
  • Apply the necessary first aid when required.
  • Provide “learn to swim” lessons for beginners.
  • Provide the necessary instruction and supervision for all beginners.
  • Present water orientation and safety drills to all swimmers.
  • Assist with swimming instruction for advanced swimmers.
  • Provide the necessary first aid and CPR intervention when required.

Pool Management and OHS:

  • Ensure a safe environment in and around the pool premises.
  • Ensure that adequate rescue and emergency equipment is readily available.
  • Ensure that there are rules and regulations governing the utilization of the pool.
  • Ensure that rules are displayed and obeyed.
  • Liaise with Campus Protection Services.
  • Liaise with Safety Health Environment for annual risk assessment.
  • Control access to the pool.
  • Assign times for swimming.
  • Open and close the pool when not in use.

Pool Maintenance:

  • Supervise the maintenance of the swimming pool.
  • Ensure that the water PH Level is correct and controlled.
  • Ensure that the filter system is functional and running correctly.
  • Carry out the necessary filter cleaning procedures when required.
  • Ensure that the pool floor is vacuumed regularly.
  • Ensure that the water level is correct.
  • Monitor the correct application of pool chemicals.
  • Ensure that the pool is maintained during the off-season.
  • Report all concerns and faults to the Maintenance Division.
  • Keep an inventory of all equipment.
  • Inform the Ground Contractor of required maintenance.

Sport Administration:

  • Ensure the efficient and effective running of Chess and Table Tennis with respect of practice venues on site. 
  • Assist with the daily administration requirements of the Sport Clubs.
  • Administer the local league programmes.
  • Arrange transport and meals for competitions and league fixtures.
  • Keep a record of results and Club Manager’s reports.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of required relevant documentation. 
  • Accompany the relevant teams on USSA events, when possible.
  • Assist with the administration and preparation for USSA tournaments.
  • Assist with the issuing of attire and equipment for official events.
  • Assist with the verification of affiliated/registered players.
  • Execute the Sports Division’s operational guidelines and ensure that proper consultation is done with the Sports HOD, Student Sports Council, and other Sports Officers.
  • Compile and submit quarterly club reports.

Financial Administration:

  • Ensure the submission of the allocated Clubs’ programme of action.
  • Provide a cost estimation for the allocated Clubs’ activities according to the programme of action.
  • Monitor the spending of allocated Clubs’ funding.
  • Capture financial transactions on the KFS system once approved.
  • Keep records of all financial transactions created on the KFS system. 
  • Keep records and proof of all achievements for the issuing of sports merit bursaries.

Minimum requirements

  • A Certificate in lifesaving and instruction.
  • A Certificate in first aid and CPR.
  • A Certificate (NQF level 5) or Diploma (NQF level 6) in Sport Administration
  • Professional registration with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) or any other accredited life-saving association in South Africa.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ lifesaving and swimming instruction experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ pool management experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ sport administration experience.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Experience in coaching swim teams and teaching swimming lessons to beginners and non-swimmers.
  • Closely monitoring activities related to the pool area, identifying any safety issues throughout the shift.
  • Closely monitoring weather reports to make sure students remain safe.
  • Opening and closing the pool each day according to scheduled hours.
  • Responding to emergencies and rescuing swimmers.
  • Performing first aid procedures.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Club administration.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Must be able to attend to crisis situations.
  • Composed and assertive.
  • Responsive and alert.
