Job description
Purpose of the position:
To effectively supervise and lead the cataloguing unit on campus. Cost-effective and careful creation of metadata. Ensure quality international cataloguing practices are adhered to. Enhance discoverability and access to all information resources.

Minimum requirements
- B.Bibl or B.Inf or any Bachelor’s Degree plus Post Graduate Diploma in LIS
PROFESSIONAL STATUS:
- LIASA membership is essential
EXPERIENCE:
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in Cataloguing on level 2 (AACR2 and RDA)
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in allocation of subject headings according to LCSH
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in classification according to DDC23
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:
- In depth knowledge of Resources Description Access (RDA) and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) for the bibliographic description of information resources and solving of cataloguing problems.
- Indexing of the content of information resources by assigning subject headings according to the Library of Congress Subject Headings list (LCSH)
- Classification of information resources according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
- Knowledge of electronic bibliographic tools.
- Computer skills and knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Groupwise and the Internet.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to work independently and with little guidance.
- Accuracy.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team.
- Proficiency in English and Afrikaans
- Ability to work under pressure
- Knowledge of the cataloguing module of a library system
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
