Job description

The Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Physiology will make significant contributions to teaching and learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiology programs at the Potchefstroom Campus. The staff member
will teach Physiology theory and practice to Health and Natural Sciences students and assist in the
supervision of post-graduate students of the honours, MHSc and PhD programs. The Lecturer / Senior
lecturer in Physiology will also contribute to the research activities in the Hypertension in Africa Research
Team(HART) on his/her/them interest in cardiovascular disease.

The Lecturer / Senior lecturer in Physiology should be experienced in lecturing of physiology related modules
with an interest and advanced knowledge of epidemiological/public health/intervention research studies within the cardiovascular physiology field. The Lecturer / Senior Lecturer should be able to:
  • Implement effective lecturing of physiology modules using a blended learning approach.
  • Show leadership and innovation in research and teaching-learning excellence.
  • Participate in activities in physiology related to teaching-learning and cardiovascular research (including funding applications, team leader, etc.)
  • Promote personal development and student guidance.
  • Assist with the implementation of strategies regarding physiology for the adapted honours and undergraduate programs
1.     Teaching-Learning and community involvement
  • Apply advanced knowledge, skills and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in the broader field of physiology.
  • Use advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate, and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises
  • Demonstrate advanced lecturing and practical skills in physiology
  • Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students
  • Participate and show leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.
  • Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and organisations at local, national, and international levels.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the university.
  • Complete any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching learning.
2.     Leadership, management, and service to the university
  • Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees, any other relevant committees as requested by the line manager and working parties within the University.
  • Relate to administrative or representative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU (involvement will be determined by the level of the position). This normally include delegated administrative, marketing or planning work successfully undertaken in the University, relevant faculty, school or discipline, capacity building, mentoring, administrative or representative responsibilities discharged elsewhere in the University, including leadership or participation in academic or professional organisations, including relevant contributions to the wider community; and/or public representations on behalf of the University in an official or professional capacity, enhancement of the image of the University with inter alia prospective students, employers of graduates, professional bodies and the community
3.     Research and community involvement
  • Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology related teaching-learning or epidemiology/public health/interventional research relevant to the future of the Physiology department or Hypertension in Africa Research Team. Associate Professor/Professor level should give special attention to the study of Cardiovascular Physiology.
  • Identify or formulate research problems and researchable questions in the applicable field of interest.
  • Design and conduct research projects write research reports and prepare applications for research funding.
  • Communicate research outcomes to experts through publishing in accredited refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research.
  • Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and organisations at local, national, and international levels.
  • Actively participate in teaching-learning research in the field of expertise as part of the development of an academic profession for example Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research (SoTL), other T&L research opportunities available through CTL, UCDG, etc.
4.    Social responsiveness
  • Maintain involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which general physiological knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases in South Africa and the world beyond the University.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with internal and external (community) role players.
  • Embrace engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement involving students’ community service, and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise.
  • Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.    
Functional/Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills):
  • Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning in a blended environment and research and innovation activity.
  • Knowledge, skills, and practical experience in the field of Physiology with an interest in a suitable field of Human Physiology and or Teaching/Learning research
  • Excellent problem-solving skills regarding the key performance areas.
  •  Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data.
  •  Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU.

Minimum requirements

LECTURER:
A MSc in Human Physiology
Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in relevant active involvement and participation in teaching and learning including the following aspects:
  • Effective participation in teaching;
  • Design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended);
  • Use of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies;
  • Effective assessment practices;
  • Reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative);
  • Reflection and peer evaluation on depth of subject knowledge;
  • Satisfactory student success rate (throughput);
  • Conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in participation in research activities and involvement with the research component of master’s and doctoral programmes.
  • 1-2 publications of conference proceedings and/or scientific papers 
SENIOR LECTURER:
A doctoral degree (PhD) in Human Physiology
Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in relevant active involvement and participation in teaching and learning including the following aspects
  • Effective participation in teaching;
  • Design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended);
  • Use of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies;
  • Effective assessment practices;
  • Reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative);
  • Reflection and peer evaluation on depth of subject knowledge;
  • Satisfactory student success rate (throughput);
  • Conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in participation in research activities and involvement with the research component of master’s and doctoral programmes.
  • 5 publications of conference proceedings and/or scientific papers
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  •  Senior Lecturer, a track record of postgraduate student supervision- 1 MSc delivered
  • Professional body Membership with South African Heart Association (SAHA) or Southern African Hypertension Society (SAHS) or International Society of Hypertension (IHS) or Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or Physiology Society of South Africa (PSSA).
