Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Rendering psychological support to students.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Individual service to students
- Crisis management- attend to during and post hours crises, working in coalition with the Campus Health Care Centre and the Protection Services.
- Screening and identification of mental health challenges.
- Containment of presenting difficulties.
- Provide preventative developmental counseling services and interventions.
- Provide academic support.
- Psycho-education and training.
Workshops and Outreaches
- Develop, implement and evaluate workshops aimed at addressing psychological stressor trends noted in presenting problems of students.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and student structures to conduct outreaches aimed at emphasising awareness of the Counselling Centre as well as preventative developmental interventions.
Client administration
- Record of sessional process notes, as required by the HPCSA.
- Competency in report writing for internal and external stakeholders.
Personal Development
- Adhere to annual CPD requirements as mandated by the HPCSA.
Minimum requirements
- An Honour’s degree in Psychology (NQF level 8) or the equivalent thereof with specialisation in counselling, crisis management, trauma debriefing and academic support.
- Must be accredited and professionally registered with the HPCSA as a Counsellor.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience as a Student Counsellor within the Higher Education sector.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Professional membership with SAADCHE.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience in an independent practice.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of student life/ affairs – its challenges and achievements.
- Knowledge of a multi-cultural environment.
- Sound understanding of ethical professional conduct.
- Project Management and Organisational Experience- develops project plans; co-ordinates projects; communicates changes and progress; completes projects on time and budget.
- Change Management- develops workable implementation plans; communicates changes effectively; build commitment and overcomes resistance; monitors transition and evaluates results.
- Report writing- monitoring and evaluation skills.
- Strong computer skills with three years’ experience in Microsoft Office, or similar.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Problem Solving- identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyses information skilfully; develops alternate solutions.
- Oral Communication- speaks clearly and persuasively in a positive or negative situations; demonstrates group presentation skills.
