Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The role of graphic design for learning in higher education encompasses the creation of visually engaging and effective educational materials that enhance the learning experience for students and facilitate the communication of complex concepts. This specialized field of graphic design focuses on adapting design principles to educational contexts to effectively communicate complex concepts, engage learners, and facilitate understanding. Some of the roles and responsibilities of graphic design for learning in higher education include, Instructional Material Design, e-Learning Resource Creation, Visualizing Concepts, Typography and Layout, Visual Storytelling, and User Interface Design.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Planning and Analysis
- Analyse clients need and timeframe.
- Identify and conceptualise the execution of the project.
- Select appropriate designs and media to support learning, taking into consideration design theory, learning principles, research, and practical factors.
2. Multimedia design and development
- Design visual representations across both print and digital mediums.
- Apply design principles and industry best practices.
- Translate concepts into detailed and precise visual representations across various mediums and platforms.
- Develop graphic designs which aligns with learning objectives for diverse audiences.
- Participate in project meetings.
- Deliver final designs in the optimal format.
- Complete various design projects autonomously and collaboratively within the same timeframes.
- Creating educational materials such as textbooks, e-books, course materials, and digital learning resources.
- Review final layouts and propose refinements and enhancements when necessary, leveraging your expertise to elevate the final design output.
3. Administration
- Keep projects up to date on the project workflow system.
- Keeping designer work sheets up to date with projects.
- Participate in designer meetings.
4. Customer service
- Collaborate closely with academic staff, instructional designers, multimedia specialists, and other stakeholders.
- Effectively communicate design choices and strategies, to align with educational goals.
5. Personal development and Ad Hoc Tasks
- ·Stay informed about emerging trends in educational technology and design methodologies.
- Continually refine skills to adapt to new tools and techniques that enhance learning outcomes.
- Work in cross-functional teams.
- Complete ad hoc tasks as handed down by line manager.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or Graphic design, fine arts, visual communication, or a related discipline
EXPERIENCE:
- 3 years’ experience in using design software like Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver.
- 3 years’ experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams
- 3 years’ working knowledge of CSS3, HTML5, and JavaScript
- 3 years’ experience as a print designer in a graphic design studio/printing business
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:
- Proven Professional Experience: A seasoned graphic designer with a track record of success in the field or a closely related area, demonstrating a strong understanding of design principles and industry best practices.
- Compelling Portfolio: Evident mastery of graphic design showcased through a diverse and impactful portfolio, highlighting a range of projects that reflect creativity, innovation, and effective communication.
- Software Mastery: Expertise in utilizing essential desktop publishing tools, such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, to create visually stunning and engaging designs.
- Keen Visual Acumen: A sharp eye for visual composition, with the ability to harmoniously balance elements, colours, typography, and imagery to create captivating and aesthetically pleasing designs
- Multifaceted Design Skills: Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) techniques, enabling the translation of concepts into detailed and precise visual representations across various mediums and platforms.
- Project Management: Lead the design process, from ideation to execution, ensuring seamless project implementation and utilization of best practices for content management systems.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
