PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Specialised research support to the users of the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy (LEM) within NWU research groups and entities as well as external academic and industry users.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Support
· High proficiency and experience in scanning-and and transmission electron microscope operation, sample preparation procedures, and a good working knowledge of electron microscopy in general.
· Consult with users and advise on experimentation and preparation procedures for optimal electron microscopy analysis.
· Train LEM users to use the scanning and transmission electron microscope as well as ancillary equipment.
· Train users in electron microscopy techniques pertaining to sample preparation and equipment operation for biological and materials applications.
· Troubleshoot and develop new microscopy procedures.
Research
· Supervision of postgraduate students.
· Collaborative and independent research and co-authoring of publications.
Equipment maintenance and update
· Ensure that all equipment is in optimal and proper working conditions.
· Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
· Responsible for the daily calibration and alignment of electron microscopes.
· Maintenance of ancillary equipment.
· Remain abreast of newest technologies and advise on upgrades for performance enhancements.
· Participate in the documentation of related activities as required.
Administration
· Stock taking and ordering of consumables.
· Log microscope usage.
· Email quotations to prospective users.
· Schedule slots for users.
OHS
· Maintain and update SOP’s
· Ensure that all safety protocols are followed
· Advise on installing safety measures and equipment
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· High-end operation of electron microscopes (SEM and TEM).
· High proficiency in multidisciplinary sample preparation techniques for different aspects of electron microscopy.
· Research and interpretation skills, specifically where electron microscopy and analysis are used.
· Skilful use of ancillary microscopy equipment.
· Computer literacy.
· High level of dexterity.
· Problem solving and innovativeness for developing new and productive techniques

Minimum requirements
· A PhD degree (NQF Level 10) in Electron Microscopy.
· Proof of previous legal appointments.
· A minimum of 5 years’ extensive experience of electron microscopy within various scientific disciplines.
· A minimum of 5 years’ experience in EDS analysis and interpretation.
· A minimum of 5 years’ experience in various types of light microscopy.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
