Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The purpose of the position is to advise students academically, prepare and present student academic skills development workshops, render faculty teaching and learning support, jointly coordinate student academic development and support (SADS) programmes and initiatives such as the e-peer learning support programme for undergraduate distance learning students, and to contribute to the First Year Experience initiatives located in the Faculty Teaching and Learning Support (FTLS) directorate in the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Student academic advising and workshops:

  • Provide individual academic advising to students.
  • Maintain records of student walk-in consultations and referrals.
  • Prepare and present student academic skills development workshops.

2.     Faculty Teaching and Learning Support:

  • Deliver teaching and learning support and development to faculties with regards to SADS services.

3.     Student academic development and support programmes and initiatives:

  • Contribute to identified student academic development and support programmes and initiatives, e.g., e-peer learning support for undergraduate distance learning students.
  • Support the strategic projects of the unit as directed by the manager / director.

4.     Joint coordination of the First Year Experience:

  • Assist in liaising with campus student orientation committee and student life.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, deploy and remunerate all orientation assistants.
  • Coordinate the CTL SADS offering on the NWU PC open day and mini open days.
  • Recruit and train students to assist at open and mini open days.
  • Contribute to the coordination of SADS marketing and awareness on campus.

5.     Research and personal development:

  • Conduct research on student development & support programmes to inform on practice.

6.     General office admin and ad hoc tasks:

  • Maintain general office administration.
  • Respond to emails
  • Attend meetings
  • Complete ad hoc tasks as determined by the FTLS director.

Minimum requirements

·          An honour’s degree (NQF level 8) in Education, Psychology, Communication or related fields

·          A minimum of 5 years’ experience advising students, as well as in student academic development and support programmes and initiatives.

RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

·         Membership with the South African Council of Educators (SACE).

·         A minimum of 1 year’ experience in faculty support.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Rendering faculty as well as student support.

·          Individual and group student advising.

·          Student academic skills development workshops.

·          Planning and organising

·          Data capturing

·          Reporting and liaising

·          Computer skills (MS Office)

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).

·          Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

·          Client and team oriented.

·          Attention to detail, and accuracy in data handling.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
