Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Provide the required technical and managerial support to enable beef and small stock (sheep and goat) units to function effectively whilst adhering to industry standard procedures, health and safety guidelines of the North-West University. Implement best animal management programme in feeding, breeding, reproduction, health, and record keeping. Manage workers assigned to the unit to optimize their productivity. In addition, able to do other assigned functions from the HOD of Animal Science Department or Director of the School of Agricultural Sciences.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Plan and implement best beef cattle, sheep and goat management practices in feeding, breeding and reproduction.

2.       Maintain and use beef cattle, sheep and goat unit production, management and financial records.

3.       Develop, implement and manage health programmes in beef cattle, sheep and goat units for prevention and treatment of various diseases to maintain healthy animals.

4.       Assist academic staff members and postgraduate students in their research activities in beef, sheep and goat units.

5.       Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports on beef and small stock to principal technician.

6.       Supervise and manage workers assigned to the beef, sheep and goat production units.

7.       Perform other administrative duties assigned by the Department or the School of Agricultural Sciences.

Minimum requirements

  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8) in Agriculture with Animal Science/Health as areas of specialisation.
  • Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) or South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in small stock and beef management.

RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • Membership of the South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS).
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in farm animal nutrition and animal production and management.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Assist and implement practical training in beef, sheep and goat production to students and short-term course trainees in these units.
  • Maintain inventory of feed, chemicals, and other consumables required for beef, sheep and goat units and ensure these products are well resources and stocked.
  • Initiate and handle purchase requisitions for all consumables and other required materials in beef, sheep and goat units.
  • Animal sales / auctions / product marketing
  • Participate in community outreach activities related to beef, sheep or goat production.

EMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
