PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of this position is to manage all activities related to the HART research laboratory.
Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Laboratory Management
- Co-ordinate lab schedule for various biochemical analyses in different research projects.
- Manage laboratory stock including the request of quotations and placing of orders.
- Ensure that logbooks are updated on a regular basis.
- Manage and perform regular maintenance and service of equipment.
- Manage the biobank.
Quality Control & Assurance
- Create, establish, review, and maintain quality systems.
- Generate, review, update, and implement relevant standard operating procedures and other quality assurance documents.
- Manage quality of all laboratory results.
Data Management
- Verify and process of results using specialised software.
- Data capturing while preserving data integrity.
Relationship Management
- Build and maintain relationships with application specialists and sales representatives to ensure maximum support.
Safety and risk Management
- Ensure regular and correct medical and chemical waste removal.
- Promote and enforce occupational health and safety guidelines.
Training
- Train and supervise post graduate students and interns in basic sample handling, preparation, and storage.
- Train and supervise post graduate students and interns in basic laboratory analyses.
Ad hoc duties
- Perform laboratory analysis in various research projects on an ad hoc basis.
- Serve as back-up to the Snr Laboratory Technician.
- Ad hoc duties in the Hypertension Research and Training Clinic.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A B.Sc. Hons in Biochemistry (NQF Level 8).
- A M.Sc. Biochemistry (NQF Level 9)
- Registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Biological Scientist.
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in laboratory chemical pathology, haematology, and immunology.
- Advanced proficiency in ISO 17025 (a minimum of 3 years’ experience).
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in internal auditing.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Laboratory experience in chemical pathology, haematology, and Immunology
- Experience in maintaining laboratory equipment as well as implementing GLP, GCP and GCLP
- Knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance such as ISO17025
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Efficient communication and good human relations with staff and students from different racial, economical and education level backgrounds (academic staff, students, support staff, technical staff, sales representatives, and suppliers of specialised equipment)
- Good organising skills (filing etc.)
- Neat, systematic, accurate, attention to detail, responsible, trustworthy, critical, organised, dedicated
- Effective time management
