Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Temporary, part-time (3 years) lecturing positions in the NWU Faculty of Engineering

The NWU Faculty of Engineering is inviting applications from experienced practicing or retired professionals for part-time, online remote teaching positions in our Postgraduate Diploma Programmes (PGDip) (https://engineering.nwu.ac.za/engineering/postgraduate).
 
  • PGDip (Nuclear Science and Technology), also with specialization in Nuclear Technology Management.
  • PGDip (Industrial Engineering), also with specializations in Sustainability and Sustainable Mining.

We are also seeking recent B.Eng graduates for part-time assistant lecturer positions in our B.Eng programmes (https://engineering.nwu.ac.za/engineering/undergraduate).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching

  • Preparation of study guides and subject material.
  • Delivery of lectures.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • General module administration.

Research

Administration

Minimum requirements

Junior Lecturer

  • A relevant B.Sc(Hons), B.ScEng or B.Eng degree (NQF level 8)

Lecturer, in addition to the above, 

  • An appropriate Masters degree (NQF level 9) 
  • Registrable with ECSA as professional engineer
  • At least 5 years’ appropriate industry experience

Must be proficient in the following:

  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Research methodology and technical writing.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.
  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
  • The ability to solve problems independently.
  • Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
