Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The purpose of this position is to provide efficient work regarding English and Afrikaans translations and interpreting.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Promoting Multilingualism in both English and Afrikaans languages generally by translation, interpreting, editing and language advisory services in both languages:

  • Enhancing the quality of education and communication of the NWU by utilising the language support services in English and Afrikaans throughout the NWU. It is done by Translation, interpreting, editing and language advisory services provided to support services and academic articulations, thus enhancing the quality of education: translation and editing of study guides, daily operational and secretarial documentation, staff communications, inter-and intranet texts, etc.; interpreting in all internal and external spheres of the institution.

2.     Providing quality English and Afrikaans Translation, interpreting, editing services:

  • Offering Translation, interpreting, editing and language advisory services to support services and academic articulations.

3.     English and Afrikaans Terminology Development:

  • Translating and editing translated terminology lists of identified modules to promote Multilingualism.

4.     Editing of English and Afrikaans documents:

  • Consistently performing editorial tasks, enhancing the quality of communication by correct spelling, grammar, vocabulary, register, style, etc.

Minimum requirements

·          A bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Language Practice with Translations or Linguistics, Interpreting studies or any language related field.

·          A minimum of 3 years’ experience

RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

·          Accreditation with the South African Translators' Institute (SATI).

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Knowledge and experience of translation from English to Afrikaans

·          Knowledge and experience of translation from Afrikaans to English.

·          Knowledge and experience of editing English and Afrikaans documents.

·          Knowledge and experience of interpreting from English into Afrikaans

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Competency in Afrikaans

·          Competency in English.

·          Knowledge and experience in translation, interpreting and editing.

·          Good interpersonal relationships.

·          Effective time management.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
