Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Academic position at Junior Lecturer Level in the Department of Setswana, School of Languages, Potchefstroom Campus. The incumbent will be expected to be involved in the teaching and learning of undergraduate modules, participate in research activities, as well as community engagement activities, within the Faculty of Humanities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Teaching and Learning:

·        Quality teaching and learning of Setswana to L1 students

·        Set of aligned assessments and timeous feedback to students.

·        Reasonable availability to students to pay attention to queries and challenges.

·        Development of quality contemporary study material.

2.       Research and Innovation:

·        It is mandatory to register for an MA degree within the first year of employment and complete the qualification within the prescribed period.

·        Productive involvement in research activities.

3.       Academic Leadership and Administration:

·        Competent involvement in management tasks as requested.

·        Good organisational and administrative skills.

4.       Social Responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement):

·        Involvement in community engagement through CE projects and collaboration with stakeholders.

5.       Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):

·        Cooperate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet the legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·        Be able to function effectively as part of a team and relate well with colleagues and peers.

·        Be knowledgeable in the use of technology.

·        Facilitation of blended teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, team teaching, student evaluations.

·        Develop course material, assessments (formative and summative) and assignments.

·        Perform administrative tasks when required, attend workshops, seminars and conferences.

·        Teach undergraduate classes and aid in the provision of postgraduate supervision.

·        Competent computer literacy - Knowledge of MS office, knowledge and experience of computational tools in teaching.

·        Excellent proficiency in writing, teaching and communication in Setswana.

·        An understanding of linguistic phenomena in general and the grammatical structures of Setswana that is on par with the level required.

·        Competent knowledge of literary theory and the application thereof on Setswana literature

Minimum requirements

  • An honours degree (NQF Level 9) in Setswana, Literature and Linguistics.
  • A minimum of one (1) year lecturing or tutoring experience at a tertiary institution.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

·        Registration for MA or PhD.
