Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To lecture undergraduate and honours modules in Chemistry. Carry out research in the Department.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in Chemistry modules presented at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

 

Review and design academic curricula.

 

2.       Assist in running of specialized equipment and interpretation of data.

 

3.       Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the departmental administrative functions.

 

4.       Perform other duties assigned by the line manager.

Minimum requirements

  • An honours’ degree (NQF level 8) in Chemistry.
  • A minimum of 1 year teaching experience at university level.

RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Chemistry.
  • At least 1 publication in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Membership with the South African Chemical Institute.
  • A proven research track record.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Effective lecturing of undergraduate and post-graduate Chemistry theory courses at university level.
  • Ability to run specialized equipment in the Chemistry research laboratory.
  • The ability to carefully analyse data and use logic to address issues and problems at work.
  • Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines.
  • Ability to function as part of the team and also in a multicultural environment.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • The ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work regulations.
  • The ability to be cooperative with others, display a good-natured attitude, and encourage people to work together.
  • The ability to be sensitive and understanding to the needs and feelings of others.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
