Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To provide academic leadership, guidance, innovation and initiative with regard to research in the Research Unit Self-Directed Learning. To conduct own research at a high academic standard and actively participate in the management of research in the Unit in line with the NWU strategy for Research and Innovation. Provide support and guidance to the Research Director of the Unit in terms of post graduate programmes and staff development.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research
  • Scholarly guidance, innovation and initiation with regard to research in the Research Unit Self-Directed Learning.
  • Drive and support research productivity, output and quality aligned to the strategic priorities of the Unit, the Faculty and the NWU Research Plan.
  • Conduct own research at a high academic standard.
  • Active involvement in  the Unit’s research endeavours.
  • Mentor researchers, build research capacity among researchers, including creating development opportunities.
  • Assist with the research plan and strategic priorities of the Research Unit Self-Directed Learning.
  • Obtain financial support for own research projects and support researchers in the Unit to obtain external funding.
  • Drive business ventures and maintain sound public and private partnerships to facilitate income driven research contracts and projects.
  • Guide capacity building initiatives to maintain research quality.
  • Participate in post graduate programme development and guide innovation initiatives.
  • Active member of the SDL Scientific committee and the SDL Executive Committee.
  • Embark on innovative independent initiatives to obtain research funding.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD in Education (NQF level 10) with specialisation in Curriculum Studies. Self-Directed Learning or associated field, with the main duty to conduct research in Self-Directed Learning.
  • Previously employed in the field of Higher Education as Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Leader of funded research projects.
  • Author/co-author of at least 10 research articles in accredited journals since 2018.
  • Have proven teaching experience in research methodology.
  • Extensive experience in the supervision of Master’s and Doctoral students.
  • Involvement in NRF – funded research projects.
  • A proven record of international networking and collaboration.

  • NRF Rated researcher.


KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Have a proven publication record – especially over the last 5 years.
  • Have a proven record of presenting/attending relevant national and international conferences.
  • Have proven postgraduate student supervision competencies
  • Research skills, interpersonal skills/communication and computer literacy.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Team worker.
