Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
· The Snr Lecturer / Ass Prof in Human Physiology will make significant contributions to the teaching and learning area of both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiology programs at the Potchefstroom Campus. The staff member will teach Human Physiology theory and practice to Health and Natural Sciences students and assist in the supervision of post-graduate students of the honours, MHSc and PhD programs. The Snr Lecturer/Ass Prof in Physiology will also contribute to the research activities in the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) on his/her/them interest in cardiovascular disease
· The Snr Lecturer/Ass Prof in Physiology should be experienced in lecturing of physiology related modules with an interest and advanced knowledge of epidemiological/public health/intervention research studies
· The Snr Lecturer/Ass Prof should be able to:
- Implement effective lecturing of all human physiology modules using a hybrid learning approach and relevant technology.
- Show leadership and innovation in research and teaching-learning excellence.
- Participate in activities in physiology, related to teaching-learning and research (including funding applications, team leader, committee work, etc.). Research in the field of human cardiovascular physiology or a related field is a pre-requisite.
- Promote personal and professional development and student guidance.
- Assist with the implementation of strategies regarding physiology for the adapted undergraduate and honours programs.
- Supervise postgraduate students on all levels up to PhD
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching-Learning Including postgraduate supervision (Hons, MSc and PhD):
- Apply advanced knowledge, skills and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in the broader field of physiology.
- Use advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises.
- Demonstrate advanced lecturing and practical skills in physiology.
- Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students.
- Participate and show leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.
- Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels
- Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the University; and
- Complete any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching learning
2. Research and innovation activity:
- Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology related teaching-learning or epidemiology/public health/interventional research field relevant to the future of the Physiology department or Hypertension in Africa Research Team with special attention to the study of Cardiovascular Physiology.
- Identify or formulate research problems and researchable questions in the applicable field of interest
- Design and conduct research projects, write research reports and prepare applications for research funding
- Communicate research outcomes to experts through a strong publication record in accredited refereed journals, international scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research
- Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels
- Actively participate in teaching-learning research in the field of expertise as part of the development of an academic profession, for example Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research (SoTL), other T&L research opportunities available through CTL, UCDG, etc
3. Leadership, management and service to the university:
- Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees, any other relevant committees as requested by the line manager and working parties within the University
- Relate to administrative or representative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU (involvement will be determined by the level of the position). This normally include delegated administrative, marketing or planning of work to be successfully undertaken in the University, relevant faculty, school or discipline. Further responsibilities include capacity building, mentoring, administrative or representative responsibilities discharged elsewhere in the University (including leadership), participation in academic or professional organisations (including relevant contributions to the wider community) and/or public representations on behalf of the University in an official or professional capacity. To enhance the image of the University with inter alia prospective students, employers of graduates, professional bodies, and the community
4. Social responsiveness:
- Maintain involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which general physiological knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of cardiovascular and non-communicable diseases in South Africa and the world beyond the University
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with internal and external (community) role players
- Embrace engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement involving students’ community service, and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise
- Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· BSc Hons OR equivalent 4-year degree with Human Physiology as major
· PhD in Human Physiology OR A PhD in an associated or relevant field (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology or Pharmacology) with a BSc or MSc with Physiology as a major
EXPERIENCE:
· Associate Professor (5 years); Senior Lecturer (2 years):
- Relevant active involvement and participation in teaching and learning including the following aspects:
- Evaluative reflective narrative on teaching statements describing teaching philosophy, strategies and goals (ca. 1000 words)
- effective participation in teaching
- design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended)
- use of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies
- effective assessment practices
- reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative)
- reflection and peer evaluation on depth of subject knowledge
- satisfactory student success rate (throughput)
- conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning
· Ass Professor 5 years (3 Masters & 1 PhD delivered); Senior Lecturer 2 years (1 masters delivered):
- Participation in research activities and involvement with the research component of master’s and doctoral programmes
· Associate Professor 10 publications; Senior Lecturer 5 publications:
- Publication of conference proceedings and/or scientific papers
· Associate Professor 5 years; Senior Lecturer 2 years:
- Demonstrated involvement in school and faculty committees, contributions to advising students and recruitment activities
· Social responsiveness: Participation (as leader of the activities) in the following is recommended, but is not set as a minimum requirement:
- Involvement in the broader community, e.g. through media comment, community education, etc.;
- awards/prizes/grants that acknowledge service at any level; and
- academic citizenship such as participation to the benefit of a specific community
· A high level of professional and ethical conduct supported by a letter from any recent employers or referees

· Excellent problem-solving skills regarding the key performance areas.
· Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data.
· Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work bot independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
· Demonstrated language skills (in both Afrikaans and English) to function optimally within the multi-lingua environment of the NWU, especially in the context of bilingual teaching and learning practises
