Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution and carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional activities to the profession or discipline. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

Since this is an nGAP position, the candidate will be expected to register for and complete his/her doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET's Staffing South Africa's Universities Development Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. To achieve the developmental aims of the programme, the nGAP employee will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Teaching and Learning

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions.
  • Initiation and development of subject material.
2.       Development and Supervision
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honour students or of postgraduate students who engage in coursework.
  • Teaching activities may include the supervision of honours and research students. 
3.       Research and Innovation 
  • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • The conduct of research.
  • Involvement in professional activity.
4.       Development of course material       
  • Development of course material with appropriate advice and support from more senior employees.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • ·Consultation with students.   

Minimum requirements

  • A Master of Commerce (NQF Level 9) in Business Management / Marketing Management / Safety Business Management / any other relevant field. The master’s degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of the results in your application.
  • Academic excellence in a research-focused MCom degree, with evidence of research involvement and current PhD application or registration.
  • A minimum of (2) two years’ support for undergraduate teaching experience through subject-related tutoring and active involvement in presenting or sharing knowledge within a teaching and learning context.
  • Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Computer literacy in MS Office, e-mail, and the internet.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Research outputs would be desirable.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in the students’ educational environment.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Effective time management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as the ability to be self-driven.
  • Ability to solve problems independently.
  • High level of professional and ethical conduct.   

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
