Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Responsible for Teaching, Research and Community Engagement in Mathematics Education

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning

  • Teaching undergraduate modules on contact and distance mode, etc.
  • Teaching and supervision of postgraduate students
  • Study guide and study material development

Research

  • Leading and participating in national and international research projects
  •  Initiating and planning of strategic research initiatives
  • Research Publications - articles, chapters and/or books
  • Membership and participation in research entity activities
  •  NRF funded project management.

Community Engagement

  • Community service
  •  Initiate and manage community engagement projects.

Minimum requirements

Lecturer

  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics Education (NQF 9)
  • A first degree (BEd or BSc) with mathematics as a major subject up to year level 3 (BSc) / level 4 (B.Ed)
  • Professional teacher’s qualification
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching in relevant field on school level

Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD Mathematics Education (NQF 10)
  • A first degree (BEd or BSc) with mathematics as a major subject up to year level 3 (BSc) / level 4 (B.Ed)
  • Professional teacher’s qualification
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching in relevant field on school level
  • Evidence of research output
  • Completed supervision of at least one master’s student.

Associate Professor and Professor

  • A PhD Mathematics Education (NQF 10)
  • A first degree (BEd or BSc) with mathematics as a major subject up to year level 3 (BSc) / level 4 (B.Ed)
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in teaching in relevant field in higher education
  • Be an author/co-author of at least 5-10 research articles in accredited journals since 2016.
  • Completed supervision of at least 5 master’s and/or doctoral students. For Associate Professor: if no completed PhD supervision, there should be supervision in progress.

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A post graduate qualification with specialization in mathematics (NQF 8)
  • Registration with SACE
  • Leader of funded research projects.
  • Involvement in NRF – funded research projects.
  • Have a proven publication record for over 5 years.
  • Have a proven record of presenting and attending relevant national and international conferences.

KEY FUNCTIONAL & TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Have research skills, interpersonal skills/communication, and computer literacy. 

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Team worker.
  • Good interpersonal relations.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
