Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION.
To render psychological support to students on the Potchefstroom Campus.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinate Therapeutic Interventions
- Coordination of therapeutic interventions of counselling staff members.
- Coordination of counselling: emotional support services by Psychology Master's Degree students.
- Development or revision of protocols for therapeutic systems.
- Rendering of therapeutic interventions to students (online-, in-person, psychotherapeutic- and psycho-educative, individual- and/or in a group format).
2. Coordinate Crisis Interventions
- Training Junior Psychologists/Counsellors on crisis intervention.
- Attend to crises during office hours, and attend to crises after offices hours, and oversight of crises interventions conducted by Thuso personnel, on a rotational basis.
- Training of HCs, SRCs, Peer Helpers, Residence House Parents, training to external members that form part of the emergency procedures off-campus (ER24, SAPS).
- Regular revision and improvement of the inter- and intra-campus crisis intervention protocols.
3. Supervision and Training
- Supervision of Psychologists and or Psychologists-in-training when required by relevant individuals.
- Liaise and coordinate practical training opportunities of Psychology Masters' degree students at Thuso.
- Supervision of Psychology Master’s degree students (Counselling and/or Industrial; Master’s and/or Internship level; Individual and/or in Group format).
- Counselling psychology internship development, application and coordination.
4. Liaison and Service Delivery
- Liaise with various divisions on campus and coordinate professional service delivery, e.g., SAPS: student offender liaison, SJS: disciplinary office.
- Psycho-educative topic identification.
- Inter- and intra-Faculty referrals and service delivery.
5. Concessions Panel / Chair
- Active participation in panel discussions and contributions to the decision-making pertaining to the concession of students.
- In collaboration with the DRU Coordinator (and Faculty Advisor), assist with temporary applications.
- Chairing of Concession Panel discussions, when required.
6. Professional Administration
- Consecutive upkeep of statistics and additional record-keeping methods.
- Completion of process notes and completion of reports as per HPCSA guidelines.
- Assuring daily completion of administrative tasks.
7. Professional Development
- Adhere to the HPCSA required continued professional development regulations.
Minimum requirements
- A Master’s degree in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (NQF Level 9).
- Valid registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ proven experience in Psychotherapy and Counselling, as a Primary Therapist.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in various trauma interventions and approaches.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the coordination and supervision of psychotherapeutic services.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the development and presentation of psycho-educative interventions including group work.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in concessions-related applications and evaluations.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
- A PhD in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (NQF Level 10).
- Membership with the Southern African Association for Counselling and Development in Higher Education (SAACDHE) Membership.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of psychological development, requirements and interventions in young adults or students.
- Appropriate knowledge of psychology, trauma/crisis intervention and other therapeutic techniques.
- Experience in supervision and training of Intern Psychologists.
- Knowledgeable of concessions processes and applications.
- Knowledgeable in the use of social media and online/cloud platforms.
- Computer Literacy in Microsoft package (Office, Teams, One-drive, etc.).
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Ability in making, communicating, and recording professional decisions.
- Ability to function within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Good administration and report-writing skills.
- Proficient in telephonic, online and in-person communication.
