PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The subject group of Politics and International Relations seeks to fill a position of a senior lecturer. This requires an experienced senior academic who is able to teach, conduct cutting-edge research and participate in meaningful community engagement initiatives within the School of Government Studies. The candidate should hold a doctoral degree and is required to demonstrate understanding of critical knowledge areas in the discipline. Their core areas of specialisation should include Politics, Political Theories and International Relations. Extensive teaching experience, academic leadership role, supervision of postgraduate candidates and publishing journal articles serve as critical requirements to this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning:
- Teaching & administering of examination of allocated modules.
- Supervise masters and doctoral candidates.
- Conduct induction workshops for postgraduate students
2. Research & Innovation:
- To be able to publish at least two journal articles in DHET accredited or SCOPUS indexed journals.
3. Community Engagement:
- Effective participation in community development projects.
4. Administrative Responsibilities:
- Be able to assist students with basic inquiries.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD (NQF level 10) in Politics and International Relations.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching and learning experience within undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ research experience including publication of journal articles and conference attendance.
- At least a minimum of three (3) publications in peer reviewed DHET accredited or SCOPUS indexed journals.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience pertaining to community involvement.
- Evidence of postgraduate students to completion
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Possess a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated in academic area of the core knowledge relating to Politics and International Relations in order to teach and support learning on relevant modules
- Practical administrative experience and experience to lead the focus area- Politics and International Relations.
- Consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules and levels within Politics and International Relations discipline, with a PhD degree in Politics and International Relations.
- Possesses three years of post-qualification experience at the University level and teaching experience and show evidence of scholarship as attested to by publications (at least five journal articles) in academic journals in the field of Politics and International Relations, including supervision of honours and master students.
- Supervision of PhD students would serve as an advantage.
- Understanding and application of HEQF framework in a University environment.
- Involvement in community engagement initiatives would be a requirement.
- Evidence of publication in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
- Academic leadership in curriculum development.
- Teaching of honours and undergraduate students as well as the Supervision of honours research projects.
- Projecting the good image of the department in terms of recruiting students and maintaining relations with local stakeholders.
- Representing the department in different committee or administrative meetings of the Faculty and School of Government Studies.
- Excellent scholarly publications in mainstream journals in Political Science and have an impressive record in postgraduate supervision.
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
