Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Academic Literacy at the undergraduate level. It is important that the candidate has a research mindset and can be involved in the research that is done in the research entity - UPSET (Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning and Higher Degree supervision:
  • Take responsibility for a full lecturing load of the ALDE 111 and 122 modules.
  • Adhere to all requirements for the administration of ALDE 111 and 122 modules.
  • Guided development of teaching and learning materials for academic literacy modules.
  • Participate in module related teaching and learning administrative activities in the school of Languages.
Research:
  • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages
  • It is mandatory to register for a PhD programme within the first year of employment.
Management and University service:
  • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.
Social Responsiveness:
  • Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.
  • Involvement in research entity activities.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):
  • Co-operate with management, OHS officials, and colleagues to help everyone meet their legal requirements, while upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Applied Linguistics or related field with specialisation in English with focus on Applied Linguistics or related field with English.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in teaching and marking Academic Literacy undergraduate students or English for Specific Purposes or Language for Specific Purposes or Practical language subjects.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
The successful candidate must:
  • be able to teach Academic Literacy in English at first year level.
  • have obtained a high mark for undergraduate modules equivalent to those they will be expected to teach.
  • be able to time-plan.
  • be available for student consultation on module content.
  • be able do in-person teaching at the Mahikeng campus during the scheduled class times.
  • be able to work with marks spreadsheets.

  • liaise with the cross-campus teaching team.
  • be prepared to learn how to use the Learning Management System (Sakai based – eFundi).
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Have good interpersonal skills.
  • Practice professional work ethic.
  • Have student support experience (for example, SI facilitation, tutoring, peer mentoring).
  • Have the ability and willingness to work with a variety of students.
  • Be passionate about language teaching and learning.

  • Be able to work under pressure.
  • Have Leadership qualities.
 
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
