NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES: ACADEMIC LITERACY POTCHEFSTROOM POSITION NUMBER: P002237 VACANCY: LECTURER / JUNIOR LECTURER: ACADEMIC LITERACY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) PEROMNES GRADE: A9/A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: • The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Academic Literacy at the undergraduate level. It is important that the candidate has a research mindset and can be involved in the research that is done in the research entity - UPSET (Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings).
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Teaching and Learning:
·        Take responsibility for a full lecturing load of the Academic Literacy Modules.
·        Adhere to all requirements for the administration of Academic Literacy modules.
·        Guided development of teaching and learning materials for academic literacy modules.
·        Participate in module related teaching and learning administrative activities in the school of languages.
 
 

2.      Research:
·        Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.
·        It is mandatory to register for a PhD programme or M.A programme within the first year of employment.
 
3.      Management and University service:
·        Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.
 

4.      Social responsiveness:
·        Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.
·        Involvement in research entity activities.
 

5.      Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):
·        Under health and safety law, each employee has the duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by the former’s actions or omissions at work. Therefore, each employee must co-operate with management, OHS officials, and colleagues to help everyone meet their legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.






Minimum requirements

Junior Lecturer:
·        An applicable Honours degree in English studies, Applied Linguistics or any relevant field.
·        A minimum of 0-1 year of teaching at a tertiary institution.
Lecturer:
·        An applicable Master’s degree in English Studies, Applied Linguistics or any relevant field.
 
·        A minimum of 2 years of teaching at a tertiary institution.
 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Fundamental knowledge of key issues in the development of Academic Literacy.
·        Excellent communication skills.
·        Excellent level of computer literacy and LMS development.
·        Knowledge of new and innovative teaching methods: e-learning, multimedia, and classroom practice.
 

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·        Ability to work independently and as a team.
·        Be self-motivated.
·        Have the excellent administrative and organising ability.
·        Be able to act as a mentor.
·        Professional and ethical behaviour.
