Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To increase the teaching and research capacity of the school in terms of Geology and Soil Sciences

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Teaching

·        Teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level in Geology

2.       Research

·        Undertake research within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management on issues of Geology and Soil Sciences

·        Supervision of post-graduate students.

·        Produce research output through international and national accredited articles and conference contributions.

·        Fundraising for research.

3.       Admin

·        Administrative tasks including curriculum development

4.       Community Engagement

·        Application of expertise in communities to address local identified issues of Geology/Soil Sciences

 

Minimum requirements

·        MSc in Soil Science (specialised in soil classification, soil physics and/or soil mapping) (NQF Level 9)

DESIRABLE RECOMMENDATION

 

·        PhD in Soil Science (specialised in soil classification, soil physics and/or soil mapping) (NQF level 10)

·        At least 1 peer-reviewed article published

·        SACNASP membership

·        SSSSA membership

EXPERIENCE

·        1 year experience in Undergraduate teaching

·        1 year experience in postgraduate teaching

·        1 year experience in undergraduate tutoring

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

 

·        Essential: Soil Science

·        Essential: Soil classification

·        Essential: Soil physics and/or soil mapping

·        Essential: Software skills including statistics

·        Desirable: R and/or Python coding

·        Desirable: Application of soil physics for practical use (e.g. Irrigation, hydrological modelling)

·        Essential: Practical pedological skills

·        Essential: Field work experience/mapping

·        Essential: Lab / field data collection experience in measurement of soil physical properties (e.g./Infiltration measurements / Bulk density)

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
