Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY: (VANDERBIJLPARK CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: V000280 VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7/A8 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The applicant will engage in teaching and learning, in research supervision of Masters and/or Ph.D. students and in research and writing publications within Computer Science fields. This position is also for an academic who will be intimately involved in the teaching of technical modules, so industry experience is just as important as academic experience.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and learning
· Teaching Computer Science modules at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
· Mentoring project students at honours level.
2. Research
· Conducting scholarly research in the key areas of the school and research centre.
· Publishing in high impact journals and books.
· Supervision of masters and doctoral students.
· Writing of research proposals and securing funding
3. Management and Administrative
· Planning, implementing, and evaluating the school’s teaching-learning programmes and other activities.
· Developing own professional and academic leadership and management skills, with a view to academic leadership and effective quality management in the school.
· Maintaining effective ties with industry as well as local communities to ensure there is continual integration and updating of knowledge.
Minimum requirements
Minimum requirements
SENIOR LECTURER
· A PhD (10 NQF Level) in Computer Science or a relevant/related subject.
· A minimum of 3 years’ industry experience working in a field relevant to the modules being taught in the department.
· A minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at a university level.
· A minimum of 2 years’ experience with a proven research track record within Computer Science fields.

LECTURER
· A master’s degree (9 NQF Level) in Computer Science or a relevant/related subject.
· A minimum of 3 years’ industry experience working in a field relevant to the modules being taught in the department.
RECOMMENDATION (LECTURER)
· A minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching at a university level.
· A minimum of 2 years’ experience with a proven research track record within Computer Science fields.
ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:
· A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the supervision of Master’s and PhD students.
· A minimum of 2 years’ management experience.
· Involvement in the community with subject-related projects.
· Member of Professional IT/CS/IS societies/ Accreditations with industry certifications.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· A proven track record of industry experience, preferably in the Microsoft stack or alternatively in Java development in an enterprise setting or Python experience with data analysis, machine learning or similar projects.
· Have experience of upskilling either students into project work in programming, or alternatively upskilling junior programmers / graduates in projects.
· Ability to provide guidance in master’s and PhD degree dissertations and thesis. Completed supervision would not be expected at the lecturer level.
· A proven track record of having at least one publication in an accredited journal or conference proceeding per year. At lecturer level this would be a conference proceeding publication per year, and at the senior lecturer level this would be a journal publication per year.
· Perform administrative and management tasks.
· Maintaining good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation, as well as a presence in industry relationships through the school.
· Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally (writing and verbally) in the various multilingual environments of the NWU – on all levels (students, colleagues and management).
· Assist / take the lead with module / programme development.
· Conduct independent and co-operative research within the focus areas of the school and research centre.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
