Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY: FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: NEW POSITION VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The responsibilities of the CHPE increases exponentially, as strategic goals identified in the Faculty Teaching and Learning Plan (FTLP) must be reached, while additional projects and tasks as requested by the DVC. Teaching and Learning are delegated to the CHPE for implementation (in collaboration with CTL) in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The conceptualisation and development of the envisaged medical school in which CHPE are involved are commencing in 2023 which places an additional strain on the current capacity of CHPE. There are currently only three full-time academics, who are tasked with implementing the FTLP and the associated projects in the faculty. Both these academics have full-time teaching and post-graduate supervision roles, as well as research responsibilities. Faculty development and driving teaching innovation (Scholarship of teaching and learning research) form part of the CHPE key activities, and a knowledgeable and experienced person is needed to assist and support these activities. Expertise in curriculum design within online and hyflex teaching, learning and assessment is especially needed, as lecturers need support and guidance in adapting to the changed health science teaching environment. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research is much needed in this regard. It is essential that an academic with extensive knowledge and experience in the Higher Education environment, and with a good understanding of the Health Professions Education environment, as well as sufficient research skills, be appointed. This will be a new position in CHPE!
Job description

 Teaching-Learning and community involvement
  •     Apply advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies in higher education practices in the broader field of health sciences.
  •     Experience in medical curriculum, clinical content development and student support are essential.·
  •     Use advanced skills to design, develop, evaluate, and improve faculty development programmes and opportunities focussed on health science academics
  •     Involvement in mentoring programmes for both experienced academics as well as newly appointed academics in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  •     Demonstrate advanced facilitation and mentoring skills in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
  •     Demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the field of higher education and health professions education through quality post-graduate supervision, examination, and mentoring.
  •     Participate and show leadership in teaching-learning development and innovation processes within the University boundaries.
  •     Develop and maintain strategic, productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups, and divisions within the NWU, on local, national & international levels.
  •     Communicate appropriately and effectively with students and other staff, and individuals internal and external to the University
  •     Complete any ad-hoc assignments given by the line manager (Deputy-Dean Teaching and Learning), within the scope of practice.
  •     Contribute to the further expansion and development of the CHPE as a centre of expertise in health professions education.
Research and community involvement
  •       Purposefully develop own and focused research expertise in the SoTL within the health professions education domain.
  •       Actively promote collaborative research between the CHPE, CTL and the different schools and entities within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  •       Communicate research outcomes to experts through publishing in accredited refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences where applicable.
  •       Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships, connections, and relationships with other academics in the faculty, as well as people, groups, and divisions in the NWU, and on local, national, and international levels.
  •       Actively initiate and participate in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research (SoTL), and other T&L research opportunities available through e.g., CTL including interdisciplinary, cross-faculty and cross-university opportunities.
  •       Work effectively with colleagues in the CHPE post-graduate programme and projects to enhance the quantity and quality of research outputs.
Leadership, management, and service to the University
  •       Participate in opportunities to serve the faculty and the university by serving on CHPE committees, faculty committees and task teams, and where needed, represent the FHS on NWU committees and task teams.
  •       Actively participate in academic organisations relevant to Higher Education and Health Science Education to expand the academic network and to service the larger community in these fields.
  •       Demonstrate excellent project management skills in the implementation of NWU and FHS strategic priority projects.
  •       Build capacity in the FHS to enlarge the SoTL footprint in all schools.
Social Responsiveness
  •       Maintain involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which general higher education knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of teaching and learning in South Africa and the world beyond the University.
  •       Communicate appropriately and effectively with internal and external (community) role players.
  •       Embrace engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise.
  •       Execute activities by which health science education skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  •        An undergrade qualification in Education; Higher Education or Health Professions Education (NQF Level 8)
  •        A BSc Hons degree OR equivalent 4-year degree in Education; Higher Education or Health Professions Education (NQF Level 8)
  •        Postgraduate: A PhD (for Senior Lecturer) in Curriculum Development in Higher Education (NQF Level 9/10)
 EXPERIENCE:
  •        A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning within an academic and research area.
  •        A minimum of 5 years’ experience in lecturing in higher education; theory and practice (face to face, blended/hybrid, online).
  •       A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the use and development of LMS, online platforms, teaching-learning technologies.
  •       A minimum of 5 years’ experience in service delivery in the field of faculty development.
  •       A minimum of 5 years’ experience with demonstrated (proof of dates and activities) commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to engage with academics’ development and welfare as university teachers.
  •       A minimum of 5 years’ experience with evidence of own continuous professional development to learn and improve as an effective higher educationalist.  
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  •       A minimum of 3years’ experience with a track record of research activity, including refereed publications and postgraduate student supervision.
  •       Must be registered with societies/councils in the relevant fields of higher education and education research, for example the HELTASA, ISSOLT, SAAHE, AfriPEN
  •       Senior Lecturer at least 2 memberships.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
  •         Computer literacy (Windows MS Office, Excel, use of e-mail and internet)
  •         Knowledge and skills of qualitative analysis software (Atlas.ti®)
  •        Knowledge and skills of qualitative analysis software (EndNote)
  •         Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU. 
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
  •        Have excellent people and conflict resolution skills.
  •        Can apply time management and work independently (on their own and without supervision).
  •        Must be able to work well in a group and with colleagues from different disciplines and fields.
  •        Demonstration of initiative and leadership in research and teaching and learning in higher education should be evident.
  •        Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment, which can be proven
