PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The incumbent will be at lecturer level and will be involved in different KPA including teaching and learning (undergraduate and postgraduate); carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise which fits into the faculty’s focus areas; undergraduate supervision; community service and tasks which relate to all the above activities.
Since this is an nGAP position, the candidate will be expected to register for and complete his/her doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET's Staffing South Africa's Universities Development Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. To achieve the developmental aims of the programme, the nGAP employee will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
- Preparation and presentation of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical classes, and workshops; marking and assessment.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the employee has responsibility.
- Attend courses and development opportunities to equip and enhance professional skills to prepare the lecturer for an academic career.
RESEARCH AND RELATED ACTIVITIES
- Conduct research, attend supervision training, supervise senior staff members, develop scholarly, research and professional skills
ADMINISTRATION, COMMITTEE AND LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
- Administrative functions primarily connected with subjects in which the employee teaches. Acting as module coordinator with guidance by senior academic. Attending to all tasks associated with academic and research development.
- Attendance at faculty committee meetings and active participation
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND SOCIAL RESPONSIVENESS
- Sharing of expertise and service to the scientific community. Involvement in community engagement and social cohesion, including media commentary, serving on review structures inside and outside the faculty/university, promotion of the university image, and internationalisation.
- Involvement in community engagement activities, sharing of expertise and development of academic citizenry profile.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.

Minimum requirements
- An LLB (NQF level 8).
- An LLM in any field of Law (NQF level 9) and studying towards or a strong interest in studying towards a PhD (Law) or LLD (NQF level 10). The master’s degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of the results in your application.
- A minimum of one (1) year experience in academia.
- Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as email, Internet and the electronic retrieval of legal resources.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written).
- Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
- Knowledge of modern platforms and learning management systems (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment in teaching and learning and the incorporation of technology and AI.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Good interpersonal skills, EQ and adaptability.
- The ability to work in a group, collaborate and lead.
- The ability to accommodate multiculturalism, diversity and multilingualism.
- Good time management, organisational skills, reporting (oral and written) skills, planning and problem-solving skills.
