Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To conduct and partake in activities in line with HySA Infrastructure’s mandate. The activities related to research and development and ongoing commercialization.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs)
  • Contribute to development and production of CCMs for water electrolysis and electrochemical hydrogen compression under leadership of prof D Bessarabov. Produce related manuals and operational procedures.
Catalyst development for hydrogen technologies
  • Process development and production of PGM catalyst using wet chemistry for hydrogen technologies. Produce related manuals and operational procedures.
Expansion of Hydrogen technologies
  • Identify and establishment on new hydrogen technologies (e.g., chemical application of hydrogen).
Local/international communication with suppliers
  • Communication with local and international suppliers.
Equipment maintenance
  • Operation, maintain and service expensive equipment/arrange regular services of equipment.
 Procurement of equipment
  • Identify high-cost task-specific equipment for Research and Development and Commercialization core-activities.
Post-graduate and post-doctoral supervision, mentoring HySA tech staff
  • Supervise/co-supervise M- and PhD student and Postdoctoral fellows.
Publishing and reporting
  • Publish research done in accredited journals; write and submission of manuscripts of own work, and support others with the publishing process.
Reporting
  • Report writing and meeting updates.
Research and production support
  • Assist with topics related to material chemistry/chemical engineering.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  •  A PhD in Chemistry (NQF Level 10) AND . M. Eng in Chemical Engineering or an MSc in Chemistry (NQF Level 9).
  • A minimum 5 years’ experience in the development and fabrication of CCM for water electrolysis and electrochemical hydrogen compression/purification.
  • A minimum 5 years’ experience in Electrocatalyst for PEM WE development and supply chain management.
  • A minimum 5 years’ diverse experiencein Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
  • A minimum 5 years’ experience in post-graduate and post-doctoral supervision.
  • A minimum 5 years ‘experience as a Principle Investigator (PI) of an internationally funded research project.
  • International exposure and training at international institutes.
  •  A minimum 5 years’ experience in Hydrogen-based technologies in the metallurgical industry.
  • Material development for on-demand hydrogen generation Material development for on-demand hydrogen generation
  • Ongoing training by international companies on operation of a specific equipment.
  • Track record of 10 years in scientific publications in accredited journals (registered in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, e.g.).
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
  • In-depth knowledge of chemistry, chemical engineering, and thermodynamics on an advanced level.
  • Advanced knowledge of hydrogen-technologies.
  • Beneficiation of platinum group metal processing.
  •  Firm understanding of analytic processes.
  • Microsoft Office.
  •  A track record of registered Intellectual Property (IP).
  • Broad familiarity with equipment used to produce CCMs on small and medium scale.
  • Familiarity with analytical tools relevant to material, catalyst, and CCM development.
Behavioural Competencies
  •  Must work well in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Work under pressure – specifically be able to produce high-quality reports on short notice.
  • Problem identification and solving skills.
  • Conduct ethical and honest research
