PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Due to the large number and limited PCs, students are grouped according to the PCs and allocated different time slots. Thus, it is important that a lab assistant be available at all times to assist students and also provide support to the lecturer. KCOM 211, COMS313, COMS223 and all broadcasting modules with each module having over 100 students, lab capacity is 20 computers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
COMS 114
- Lab assistance in Visual Communication (Desktop Publishing) with a focus on practical classes.
COMS 215
- Lab assistance in Broadcasting (Sound and Video Editing) with a focus on practical classes.
COMS 313
- Lab assistance in Applied Web Development with a focus on practical classes.
All Indicated Modules
- Student support and engagement.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 (NQF level 4).
- A minimum of two (2) years’ practical experience in visual communication, broadcasting or web development - the Lab Assistant is to always be available during office hours to assist students and provide teaching assistance to the lecturer.
ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCE:
- A bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Visual Communication.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia, Visual Communication, Broadcasting, Web Development, or related field.
- Proficient in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and web development tools (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services.
- Strong portfolio showcasing previous related projects.
- Familiarity with e-learning platforms and tools.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.

- Passion for supporting and guiding students.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
