Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To effectively supervise and lead the cataloguing functions on campuses.
Cost effective and careful creation of metadata (bibliographic records) representing acquired, recommended and in demand information resources and thus providing information such as creator names, titles and subject terms that describe resources, to enable library users (students, researchers, lecturers and staff members) to have quality access to all sources of information that the library possess on a particular topic, by a particular author, or in a particular format.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cataloguing:
- Catalogue information resources (including e-book packages) according to international standards.
- Create meta data records for electronic theses and dissertations on Boloka.
- Add URLs to bibliographic records on WMS.
- Add library holdings to WorldCat to e.g. support interlibrary loans.
Classification:
- Classify information resources according to international standards.
- Provide subject headings and translate into Afrikaans where necessary.
Access points and authority records:
- Formulate different types of access points according to international standards.
- Verify whether all access points have authority records. If not, import relevant authority record from WorldCat.
- Continuous updating of existing authority records.
“Reclamation” project:
- Update incomplete bibliographic records and add library holdings to WorldCat.
Liaison and reporting:
- Liaise with departmental head and fellow cataloguers.
- Handle bibliographic queries and requests from branch librarians, VTC and information librarians.
- Compile and provide statistical reports on work output of the division as a whole to departmental head
- Report on work output to departmental head and manager.
Miscellaneous tasks:
- Attend related workshops and conferences.
- Ad hoc tasks as requested by the manager.
Minimum requirements
- A B.Bibl. degree (NQF level 7) OR a B. degree (NQF level 7) with a postgraduate qualification in Information Science (NQF level 8).
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Cataloguing on level 2 (AACR2 and RDA).
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in allocation of subject headings according to LCSH.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in classification according to DDC23.
KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- In depth knowledge of Resources Description Access (RDA) and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) for the bibliographic description of information resources and solving of cataloguing problems.
- Indexing of the content of information resources by assigning subject headings according to the Library of Congress Subject Headings list (LCSH)
- Classification of information resources according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
- Knowledge of electronic bibliographic tools.
- Computer skills and knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and the Internet.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to work independently and with little guidance.
- Accuracy.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team.
- Proficiency in English and Afrikaans
- Ability to work under pressure.
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
