Introduction
Job description
To teach Geography Education and/or Environmental Education. An Associate Professor/Senior lecturer/Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching, learning and research efforts of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional career relevant to the profession or discipline in terms of research and community engagement.
- Teaching undergraduate Geography and Environmental Education modules on contact and distance mode, etc.
- Teaching and supervision: Postgraduate
- Study guide and study material development.
Research (Only for Associate Professor)
- Leading and participating in research national and international projects.
- Initiating and planning of strategic research initiative
- Research Publications - articles, chapters and/or books.
- Membership and participation in research entity activities
- Supervision of M and D students.
- NRF funded project management.
Community Engagement
- Community service
- Initiate and manage community engagement projects.
Minimum requirements
Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer
- A PhD in Geography, Geography Education and/or Environmental Education (NQF 10).
- An MEd/MA/MSc in Geography and/or Environmental Education (NQF 9)
- A BEd Honours in Geography Education or a BA/BSc honours in Geography
- A bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/B.Ed.) with Geography as a major subject up to university level 3 (NQF 7).
- PGCE qualification or related teachers’ qualification, specialising in Geography
- A minimum of 3 years’ Geography teaching and learning experience in school (Grade 10 to 12) or university.
- A minimum of 3 years research experience in Geography Education or Environmental Education.
- Evidence of Masters and Doctoral students’ supervision to completion.
Lecturer
- A MEd/MA/MSC in Geography, Geography Education and/or Environmental Education (NQF 9).
- A BEd Honours in Geography Education or a BA/BSc honours in Geography
- A bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/B.Ed.) with Geography as a major subject up to university level 3 (NQF 7).
- PGCE qualification.
- A minimum of 3 years’ Geography teaching and learning experience in school (Grade 10 to 12) or university.
Added Advantage:
- Professional registration with SACE.
Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
- Advanced knowledge of Geography (Human and Physical Geography, Map Work, and GIS) and Environmental Education to teach Geography and/or Environmental Education content modules to undergraduate B.Ed. and Hons students.
- Knowledge of dynamic teaching-learning technologies,
- Good computer skills in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
- Use of blended learning environments, e.g. Internet and email.
- Advanced research skills.
