Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Involved in teaching and learning (undergraduate and post-graduate programmes); research which fits into the Faculty's focus areas; post-graduate supervision (where applicable); community service and tasks which relates to all above activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching and Learning including supervision.
  • Research and Innovation.
  • Academic leadership, management and administration/ university service.
  • Social responsiveness: Community and scientific engagement.
  • Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

Minimum requirements

  • An LLB degree (NQF level 8).
  • An LLM (NQF level 9) in any field in law (Lecturer).
  • An LL D (NQF level 10) in any field in law or a PhD/DPhil (NQF level 10) in Law OR an LL M (NQF level9) plus 5 years' experience in private practice (Senior Lecturer).

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in academia.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ admission experience as an attorney or an advocate in private practice or seven (7) years’ experience as a prosecutor.
  • Proven record of postgraduate supervision.
  • Publications in accredited journals. 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with expertise concerning teaching-learning and research in any of the following subject fields: Public Law - Constitutional Law, Socio Economic Rights, Administrative Law. However, candidates with expertise in any other legal field will be considered.
  • Legal language skills and excellent writing skills. 
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as email, Internet and the electronic retrieval of legal sources. 
  • The ability to use LMS normally used in HEI and to incorporate AI and technology in teaching. 
  • Experience or interest in curriculum design and development.
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and a strong interest in research.  
  • Language skills in order to function optimally in the different multilingual environments of the NWU.

  • High emotional intelligence and good interpersonal relations.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

REMUNERATION

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
